Need Help getting XP to see Vista

edited December 2008 in Science & Tech
I am running XP service pack 3 and my daughter recently bought a new computer with Vista on it. I did all the regular file sharing stuff but the two do not see each other on the network. Nothing wrong with the cabling. Anyone have an idea I might try?

How are they trying to see each other? Just file manager interface, or are they trying to connect through a game or some other app?

If it's just explorer, make sure that the two systems are in the same workgroup. This often helps them find each other. If that dosen't do it, use the manual search function to search the network for the specific computer name you're looking for.

I have a home network through a router. DSL Modem to router for internet. the Vista system gets on the internet just fine. 2 computers on XP are networked and file share with no problem. The Vista computer is on the same workgroup but does not share files, nor can it get to the printer (not a network printer) attached to one of the XP computers. Manual search sees nothing of the Vista system and the Vista system only sees itself

This might help, it's a hotfix from Microsoft:

Wellll... what do you know! My problem was simpler than I thought. I had the XP computer network set up as a public network which, as you may know then blocks access for security. When I switched it to a private network ... Presto! The computers can see each other. :eek3:
So thanks to those who tried to help me solve this riddle. (even though I took forever to get around to trying those ideas :D
