One question before I comment, do you live in England? And do you hope to buy local?
Also, don't forget your HDDs, DVD drive and extra usb/card reader ports.
I'm not sure if saving money on your RAM is a good idea since RAM is the cheapest part of your computer. 2GB would be enough for now ONLY IF your getting Windows XP. If you decide to get Vista, 2GB will be sluggish especially if you want to game with this computer. Don't get me wrong, it will work but your loading times will be a lot longer than it needs to be and honestly, when you can get a gig of RAM for < 10$, why skimp?
As for the GPU (8400GS for example) your talking about riding on low end market cards. Your going to find yourself upgrading a lot especially if you want to play some newer games. Heck, I don't even think the 8400GS can run CoD5 (barely maybe) so why not invest in a mid range card, when they have it on sale, then not worry about upgrading for a while. (This is when crossfire will come into play since you can buy a low range card to compliment you previously mid-range card with great preformance increase.)
One last thing, when your talking about resolution, your talking GPU memory, which some lower end cards may have enough to run newer games on lowest settings (low textures, low screen rez, etc). Yet you should think about the card's processing power as well since this is whats going to display real time graphics like shadows and character movement. If it's too low the card will not render things properly, not run things at all, and there's a high chance your card will get very hot often, leading to even slower preformance.
Hope that helps.
About just getting a asus motherboard i was kind of recommended the DFI motherboard because of the crossfire and it being good at overclocking but i guess going for a lower motherboard would save money and could be just as good.
