Another startup loop

I am having problems after removing a few unwanted programs. I am pretty confident that something (driver or file) was removed that the OS needs. Is there a way to find what file is missing and to copy a like file from another computer's set-up cd then replaceing it where it belongs? I've tried Thrax's method of Repairing Windows XP in 8 Commands to no avail.
Can I do a repair install without setup disc or CD from recovery console?
No safe mode. (Load screen stops at AGP440.SYS)
Startup loops. (blue HP screen -black Windows XP screen - start up options -then back to HP screen)

Try connecting that drive to another PC with an external hard drive adapter. Copy AGP440.sys from the healthy computer over the top of the damaged file on the externally-connected hard drive. You can see where this file resides by searching for AGP440.sys on the healthy PC.

It's probably not going to fix it, but it's worth a shot.

You may also have a damaged hard drive, which I usually would not immediately leap to, but HPs are good at that.

Thanks Thrax. I've had this computer for about 3 years. It's been pretty good to me so far, but I know it's getting time to replace it.

I don't have another PC except my laptop and no adapter. Can I use my laptop with adapter for this? Is the adapter expensive? Can I do a search from the recovery console and possbly find it somewhere else then replace it?

I'm only at maybe novice level for now, but problems like this are a good learning experience to computers.

    Thanks Again

Microsoft site said if safe mode hangs on agp440 to disable it in the recovery console. I did and still nothing. Now it hangs on the line that was above it (Mup.sys):confused2:eek3:mouldy:
