Ubuntu 8.10 32bit Installation Issue

edited December 2008 in Science & Tech
I'm trying to install Ubuntu 8.10 32bit on my PC and it keeps freezing on me...

here's my machine spec:

CPU: AMD Athlon64 2000+ 754 (@2.0GHz)
RAM: 2.5GB (1GBx2+512MB)
M/B: Winfast NF4K8AB
VGA: Radeon X600 XT 256MB DDR PCI-e 16x
HDD: 150GB

it freezes on different locations during installation process although i suspect it has something todo with my video card...

I have tried installing Ubuntu 8.04 and 7.10 with no luck

can anyone help me? cheers

I've just installed 8.04 with very few issues on a similar rig, my video card is a Sapphire X700 Pro.

You could try the text only installation of the alternate version, that seems to be more forgiving. Install it with minimum graphics and tune it up later

Or when you're installing it using the regular disc, go to wherever you can edit the boot options (usually F6, I think) and add XFORCEVESA to the end of the tags - that should force the installer to use the standard VESA driver, and while it may not look fantastic, it should at least install. After that you can worry about getting the right driver installed.
