spyware? (Solved)

edited December 2008 in Spyware & Virus Removal
Hi,

I am including a HijackThis log below. I have a 2.5 year old Dell laptop that I am ready to throw out the window :p I recently took off all programs I no longer need, moved all files to an external HD and ran a few disk cleanup and the defrag program. It helped a little, but the computer is still slow as anything. I usually put it in standby instead of shutdown because it somedays will take 5-10 minutes to turn on.

When I do a complete shutdown/restart, I've been getting a message for the past month or two that my free spyware trial version has expired (yes, shame on me, I should have paid attention to that). It's AVG Anti-spyware. I'm starting to think I got something while the program wasn't monitoring. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, what is a good spyware program I should use?

One more (random) thing. In the HijackThis log, I noticed somethign about a Verizon program. Before I posted, I tried to go and uninstall, since I now have Comcast internet, but there's nothing in teh Add/Remove about verizon. A verizon program does show up in the start menu, but when I try to uninstall, it says it cant' find the program. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help!

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
    1. Please Read All Instructions Carefully
    2. If you don't understand something, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
    3. Please do not run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you
    4. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those few things, everything should go smoothly laechel.gif

Please Note, your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use.
Be assured, any links I give are safe

I apologize for the delay in responding, but as you can probably see the forums are quite busy.
Unfortunately there are far more people needing help than there are helpers.

If you still require help please do the following

    Download and Run RSIT
    • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
      • log.txt will be opened maximized.
      • info.txt will be opened minimized.
    • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

    Information

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

    Ares 2.0.9
    Azureus

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

    Also available here.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).
Please note: you must NOT use this whilst we are cleaning your machine.

    Step 1

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

    • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
      • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
      • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
      • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

    Step 2

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

    Bleeping Computer ComboFix Tutorial

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

    Step 3

    Logs/Information to Post in Reply
Please post the following logs/Information in your reply
    • MalwareBytes Log
    • Combofix Log
    • How are things running now ?
  • edited December 2008

    Step 1

    OTMoveIt
Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer and save it to your desktop
    • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
    • Copy the lines in the codebox below. ( Make sure you include :Reg )
    :Reg
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints 2\{361ac05d-0e0d-11da-9aa9-806d6172696f}]
    :Files
    c:\windows\Internet Logs\xDB*.tmp
    c:\windows\Internet Logs\xDB1B.tmp
    c:\windows\Internet Logs\xDB1A.tmp
    c:\windows\Internet Logs\xDB19.tmp
    c:\windows\Internet Logs\xDB18.tmp
    c:\windows\Internet Logs\xDB17.tmp
    c:\windows\Internet Logs\xDB16.tmp
    c:\windows\system32\68A30BB485.sys
    c:\windows\system32\85B40BA368.sys
    :Commands
    [Purity]
    [EmptyTemp]

    • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

    • Click the red Moveit! button.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
    • Close OTMoveIt3

If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

    Step 2

Download Winpatrol It is an excellent startup manager and then some !!

Install Winpatrol, and when running click on the Startup Programs tab
The following items can safely be disabled.

    [ehTray] C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehtray.exe
    [SynTPEnh] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe
    [CTSVolFE.exe] "C:\Program Files\Creative\Mixer\CTSVolFE.exe" /r
    [ISUSPM Startup] "c:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\isuspm.exe" -startup
    [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start
    [Verizon_McciTrayApp] C:\Program Files\Verizon\McciTrayApp.exe
    [SigmatelSysTrayApp] %ProgramFiles%\SigmaTel\C-Major Audio\WDM\stsystra.exe
    [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
    [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
    [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
    [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    [IntelZeroConfig] "C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\bin\ZCfgSvc.exe"
    [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe"
    [BluetoothAuthenticationAgent] rundll32.exe bthprops.cpl,,BluetoothAuthenticationAgent
    [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
    [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
    [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
    [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
    [AIM] C:\Program Files\AIM\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl
    [ISUSPM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\isuspm.exe" -scheduler
    [QuickenScheduledUpdates] C:\Program Files\Quicken\bagent.exe

Just click on each item and then click Disable
(if the program is running, Winpatrol will ask if you wish to stop it)

Reboot your computer and see if that has helped the boot time.

    Step 3

    Download THIS FILE
    Double click rebuild-WMI.bat
A window will open, click Y and press Enter
When it has finished, please reboot.

    Now delete C:\RSIT (entire folder)
Double click RSIT.exe (on your desktop)
you can just close the logs for the moment, we will get them later.

    Step 4

    Kaspersky Online Scanner .
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- This scan is best done from IE (Internet Explorer)

NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
    Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Once the database has downloaded, click My Computer in the left pane
Now go and put the kettle on !
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

    **Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
    • Close any open programs.
    • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

    Step 5

    Logs/Information to Post in Reply
Please post the following logs/Information in your reply
    • OTMI Log
    • C:\RSIT\Info.txt
    • Kaspersky Log
    • How are things running now ?

    Hi,

I've hit a hiccup on step 3. I've made it up to Double Click RSIT.exe (on your desktop). This file is not on my desktop. I deleted the C:\RSIT, but nothing from the desktop.

Also, in step 2, neither of these programs were in that list:
    [Verizon_McciTrayApp] C:\Program Files\Verizon\McciTrayApp.exe
    [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"

    Thanks!

    Step 3

    Download THIS FILE
    Double click rebuild-WMI.bat
A window will open, click Y and press Enter
When it has finished, please reboot.

    Now delete C:\RSIT (entire folder)
Double click RSIT.exe (on your desktop)
you can just close the logs for the moment, we will get them later.

No problem, just download it again :)

    Hi,

Here are the scans from your last instructions. Sorry it took a day - that last scan ran all night. The internet is still slow, but faster than it was :) Startup still takes a while, though :( Thanks again!

Your logs are looking clear of any active malware now, but it looks as if there is an infected item in your Eudora program ( I suspect it is an E-Mail )

Please post a fresh HJT log

    Hi,

Yay! This will teach me not to ignore the warnings that my anti-spyware program has expired.

Is there an anti-spyware/malware program that you recommend I download to run all of the time, or will one of the programs I downloaded in the past few days work for that? Also, what of the programs that I downloaded should I keep and which should I delete?

    The HJT log is below.

Since your AVG is out of date, I recommend that you uninstall it and use MalwareBytes instead.
If you decide to pay for it ( worthwhile, it is a one off payment for life ) then it protect you automatically.
If you decide to keep the free version then every couple of days just update it and start it running before you go to bed.

Let's have a bit of a clean up and then look at this boot time

Please delete RSIT.exe and C:\RSIT (entire folder)
You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

    • Uninstall Combofix
    • This will clear your System Volume Information restore points and remove all the infected files that were quarantined
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.
      • CF_Cleanup.png

    Open OTMoveIt Click Cleanup,
it will now connect to the internet and get a list of files to delete.
When a box pops up click YES.

Now then, this slow boot time ...
there is very little left, so one of the programs is obviously causing a problem

Use Winpatrol to disable the following one by one with a reboot inbetween to see if it has helped

    [!AVG Anti-Spyware] "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\avgas.exe" /minimized
    [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
    [ZoneAlarm Client] "C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zlclient.exe"

Thanks! I've uninstalled everything and plan to start using MalwareByte's program. I will probably do the one time pay option so it is always running an updated version.

I first disabled the adobe reader, which made the computer start up much quicker. It did it even quicker when I then disabled zone alarm, but I stopped there and re-enabled. I would most likely forget to run the firewall (and anti-virus) if I had them not start up automatically. I also uninstalled the AVG, which was still running at startup, even though it was out of date, which I believe helped as well.

Is there anything else that you recommend I do? Again, thank you so much for all of your help.

Oh, I did have one more question. For some reason now, my internet will not automatically connect on startup. Is there something we may have change throughout all of this that would have changed it? It just started doing it yesterday.

    Thanks!

Use Winpatrol to re-enable the following startup

    [IntelZeroConfig] "C:\Program Files\Intel\Wireless\bin\ZCfgSvc.exe"

see if that has sorted the internet start up

That took care of the internet connection issue, Thanks!

Although we're back to the slow computer and the internet being funky again, so I'm wondering if maybe it's just the computer getting old.

There is no infection now, so I suspect it is ZoneAlarm that is giving you the problem.
You could ask on their forum about any issues you may have.

Congratulations your logs look clean :)

Let's see if I can help you keep it that way

The following is some info to help you stay safe and clean.

You may already have some of the following programs, but I include the full list for the benefit of all the other people who will be reading this thread in the future.
( Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing )

    Online Scanners
I would recommend a scan at one or more of the following sites at least once a month.

    http://www.pandasecurity.com/activescan
    http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/71706/kavwebscan.html

!!! Make sure that all your programs are updated !!!
Secunia Software Inspector does all the work for you, .... see HERE for details

    AntiSpyware
      AntiSpyware is
not the same thing as Antivirus.
Different AntiSpyware programs detect different things, so in this case it is recommended that you have more than one.
You should only have one running all the time, the other/s should be used "on demand" on a regular basis.
Most of the programs in this list have a free (for Home Users ) and paid versions,
it is worth paying for one and having "realtime" protection, unless you intend to do a manual scan often.
[*]Spybot - Search & Destroy <<< A must have program
    • It includes host protection and registry protection
    • A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites

    [*] MalwareBytes Anti-malware <<< A New and effective program
[*]a-squared Free <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
[*]superantispyware <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner

    Prevention
These programs don't detect malware, they help stop it getting on your machine in the first place. Each does a different job, so you can have more than one
    • Winpatrol
      • An excellent startup manager and then some !!
      • Notifies you if programs are added to startup
      • Allows delayed startup
      • A must have addition
    • SpywareBlaster 4.0
      • SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
    • SpywareGuard 2.2
      • SpywareGuard provides real-time protection against spyware.
      • Not required if you have other "realtime" antispyware or Winpatrol
    • ZonedOut
      • Formerly known as IE-SPYAD, adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers and marketers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.
    • MVPS HOSTS
      • This little program packs a powerful punch as it blocks ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
      • For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002.
      • Not required if you are using other host file protections

    Internet Browsers
Microsoft has worked hard to make IE.7 a more secure browser, unfortunately whilst it is still the leading browser of choice it will always be under attack from the bad guys. Using a different web browser can help stop malware getting on your machine.
    • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
      1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
      2. Click once on the Security tab
      3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
      4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
        • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
        • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
        • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
        • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
        • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
        • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
        • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
        • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
      5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

If you are still using IE6 then either update, or get one of the following.
    • FireFox
      • With many addons available that make customization easy this is a very popular choice
      • NoScript and AdBlockPlus addons are essential
    • Opera
      • Another popular alternative
    • Netscape
      • Another popular alternative
      • Also has Addons available

Cleaning Temporary Internet Files and Tracking Cookies
Temporary Internet Files are mainly the files that are downloaded when you open a web page. Unfortunately, if the site you visit is of a dubious nature or has been hacked, they can also be an entry point for malware. It is a good idea to empty the Temporary Internet Files folder on a regular basis. Tracking Cookies are files that websites use to monitor which sites you visit and how often. A lot of Antispyware scanners pick up these tracking cookies and flag them as unwanted. CAUTION :- If you delete all your cookies you will lose any autologin information for sites that you visit, and will need your passwords Both of these can be cleaned manually, but a quicker option is to use a program
    • ATF Cleaner
      • Free and very simple to use
    • CCleaner
      • Free and very flexible, you can chose which cookies to keep

Also PLEASE read this article.....So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D

If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.

    Happy surfing K'

    Hello again!

It looks like a virus or something has appeared since my last message. I hadn't touched my computer again until this morning and now I can't use it at all (I'm sending this message from my work computer). When I went to use it this morning the MalwareBytes program popped up saying that a Trojan.Vundo tried to start/open when pretty much every program tries to boot up. I told it to terminate the action. Now it's at the point that it won't boot up all the way, as soon as the anti-virus starts, the entire thing freezes. The only way to shut it down is to hold the power key until it shuts itself off.

Any suggestions? I do have my boyfriend's computer at home, so I will still be able to communicate with you, even if I can't use my computer.

    Thanks!

    Hi megs,

    Firstly, DON'T PANIC !!! :)
You aren't infected. This is a glitch in MalwareBytes.
Quite how you managed to be affected by it I don't know, as it was sorted a couple of days ago.
The only thing I can think of is that you updated MBAM and then turned the machine off shortly after.

Now, let's get some info from you so that we can sort it :)

Does the machine boot at all ?
If it doesn't boot in normal mode, does it boot in safe mode ?

    To reboot in safe mode
You can boot in Safe Mode by restarting your computer, then continually tapping F8 until a menu appears.
Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

    Hi,

Whew, I was worried my computer was really done in for this time.

The computer will turn on in both modes. In normal mode, I can get it to boot up, I just can't do anything. I keep getting these errors warning about the virus, asking me to deactive, ignore or terminate the action.

If you can update MBAM, the problem will go away.
If you can't update MBAM due to the machine locking up, then start in safe mode with the instructions I gave and disable MABM from start up.
Then reboot to normal mode and download the latest database from HERE
(If you don't know how, just let me know)
  • edited December 2008
It looks like that did it! I had to boot-up in safe mode but then was able to disable and update the program.

Thanks again for all of your help!
  • edited December 2008
No problem, I'm just sorry you had the trouble with MBAM.
  • edited December 2008
No worries at all - I'm just glad it wasn't a virus and that I didn't have to completely reboot (or just get rid of) the computer!
