Inspiron 531: Memory Issues?

I decided to upgrade the RAM on old faithful inspiron 531, to 3.5GB from 2GB (DDR2 667). Installed the RAM, but the RAM will only run in single channel. I believe it's because the RAM sticks I got were single rank, not double rank like the sticks that came with the PC, but not too sure about that (If single rank memory is that there are only memory chips on one side of the stick, then I'm right.) Just came to clarify some things. Or, it's because the RAM is made from different manufacturers. Not extremely sure. Before I return the RAM, I'd just appreciate any other suggestions. Thanks.

Get another 1GB and you should be fine or another 512 and you should be fine (4 or 3GB of ram) You are single channel because you have 3 different densities and yes, that board might go Single channel with the single ranked modules.
