trojan and exploit problems

Hi. I have been having problems with my Internet Explorer running extremely slow and has now caused Windows to move at a glacier's pace. I have within the last 2 months installed Verizon's Internet Security Suite and it has found 3 viruses: exploit.java.gimsh.b (two of this one) and trojan.downloader.java.openconnection.ap
I have since performed a system restore two times, but within days of the restore, things are back to running horribly.
I know that others have had the same viruses, but I also know you should not use someone else's removal on your own computer. Please offer some guidance for the removal of these viruses. THanks so much!!

    Hi lbudgirljones,

Apologies for the delay; there are not enough helpers to respond to every thread.

    Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.
    • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
    • Click on Install.
    • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
    • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
    • Save the log to a convenient location as you'll need to post it soon.
    • Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
    • Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

    Hi lbudgirljones,

You have LimeWire, a P2P filesharing program installed.
    • Many of these programs come with unwanted components bundled with them.
    • If you wish to find out whether the one you're using does click here.
Please note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

I recommend you uninstall all forms of P2P programs via Add/Remove programs in Control Panel.

Please note: you must NOT use this whilst we are cleaning your machine.

    Please do the following...

    1. Click Start > Run > type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. From the list uninstall the following, if present:

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Security Advisor

    2. Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license accepted, reset to 100%.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
        Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases

        [*]Click OK
[*]Now under select a target to scan:
          Select
        My Computer

[*]This will program will start and scan your system.
[*]The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
[*]Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
        • Now click on the Save Report As button:
        • Change Save as type: to Text file
        • Save this as Kaspersky scan to your Desktop
[*]Post the Kaspersky report in your next reply, along with a new HijackThis log.
      • edited December 2008
I uninstalled Limewire and the other items you listed. I need to restart my computer (recommended at the conclusion of the removal of Java programs you listed), and will do so after sending this reply.

I could not properly save the Kaspersky scan that I performed. When I tried to retrieve it from my Desktop to post it, a Windows message came up saying that it was unable to open the file and that Windows must know what program created it...I saved it as a text file in my desktop just as you instructed but when I attempted to open it on my desktop, that was the message I received. The url on the kaspersky window with the scan results is the same as the start page for the initial scan itself, so that is not helpful.

I carefully copied the threat info on the scan screen and that is as follows:

Here is the 1st file name:
        C:\Documents and Settings\Lori Jones\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\jvmimpro.jar-3ad601a5-459b00af.zip
        1st threat name:
        Exploit.Java.Gimsh.b
        1st threats count: 1

        2nd threat file:
        C:\Documents and Settings\Lori Jones\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\jvmimpro.jar-5efd1945-15fe7a14.zip
        2nd threat name:
        Exploit.Java.Gimsh.b
        2nd threats count: 1

        3rd threat file:
        C:\Documents and Settings\Lori Jones\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\nRT.jar-4e3272d0-7e767b8d.zip
        3rd threat name:
        Trojan-Downloader.Java.OpenConnection.ap
        3rd threats count: 1

I hope this provides the information you needed from Kaspersky scan of my computer.

Here is the Hijack this log:

        Hi,

        That's fine!

        Please do the following...

        1. Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only!
        • Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.
        • Under Main select the following:
          • Windows Temp
          • Current User Temp
          • All Users Temp
          • Temporary Internet Files
          • Java Cache
        *The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

        2. Apart from that, the logs look clean. Please let me know how the computer is running?

Thanks Trogan...a window popped up said that it freed 510.211mbs

The computer is MUCH better just since we have started sweeping it. Thank you so much for your help. I will be recommending this site to anyone I know who needs assistance. You have been wonderful and your knowledge has made such a difference! Thanks for providing a free service like this!!

Aside from my Verizon Internet Security Suite which has antivirus and anti spyware, should I use any of the programs you have mentioned in our corrspondence on a regular basis? And should I leave all of the downloaded programs on my desktop?

Again, I cannot thank you enough for your easy to follow steps and your invaluable help!! :respect:

        Sincerely,

        Lori

You are most welcome, and thank you for the kind words.

You can keep or uninstall HijackThis; it is your choice. If you keep HijackThis, ensure it does not get used in the wrong manner, as it is a powerful tool and not to be used lightly.

I strongly recommend keeping Malwarebytes' and running regular scans with it. Make sure to update it first. You may keep ATF Cleaner and use it when you need (maybe once a month) just to free up some space. ATF Cleaner can be removed simply by deleting it from the Desktop.

        ==================================================

Now that your system is clean, kindly follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

You may already have some of the following programs, but I include the full list for the benefit of all the other people who will be reading this thread in the future.
(Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing )

        Online Scanners
I would recommend a scan at one or more of the following sites at least once a month.

        http://www.pandasecurity.com/activescan
        http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/71706/kavwebscan.html

!!! Make sure that all your programs are updated !!!
Secunia Software Inspector does all the work for you, .... see HERE for details

        AntiSpyware
        • AntiSpyware is not the same thing as Antivirus.
Different AntiSpyware programs detect different things, so in this case it is recommended that you have more than one.
You should only have one running all the time, the other/s should be used "on demand" on a regular basis.
Most of the programs in this list have a free (for Home Users ) and paid versions,
it is worth paying for one and having "realtime" protection, unless you intend to do a manual scan often.

        • Spybot - Search & Destroy <<< A must have program
          • It includes host protection and registry protection
          • A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
        • MalwareBytes Anti-malware <<< A new and effective program
        • a-squared Free <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
        • SUPERAntiSpyware <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner

        Prevention
        • These programs don't detect malware, they help stop it getting on your machine in the first place.
Each does a different job, so you can have more than one

        • Winpatrol
          • An excellent startup manager and then some !!
          • Notifies you if programs are added to startup
          • Allows delayed startup
          • A must have addition

        • SpywareBlaster 4.0
          • SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.

        • SpywareGuard 2.2
          • SpywareGuard provides real-time protection against spyware.
          • Not required if you have other "realtime" antispyware or Winpatrol

        • ZonedOut
          • Formerly known as IE-SPYAD, adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers and marketers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.

        • MVPS HOSTS
          • This little program packs a powerful punch as it blocks ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.

          • For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002.
          • Not required if you are using other host file protections

        Windows Updates (a must!)
It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. You can either click on the link above and bookmark the updates page, or open Internet Explorer, then go to the Tools menu -> Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there

        Internet Browsers
        • Microsoft has worked hard to make IE.7 a more secure browser, unfortunately whilst it is still the leading browser of choice it will always be under attack from the bad guys.
Using a different web browser can help stop malware getting on your machine.
          • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
            1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
            2. Click once on the Security tab
            3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
            4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
              • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
              • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
              • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
              • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
              • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
              • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
              • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
              • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
            5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

If you are still using IE6 then either update, or get one of the following.

          • FireFox
            • With many addons available that make customization easy this is a very popular choice
            • NoScript and AdBlockPlus addons are essential

          • Opera
            • Another popular alternative

          • Netscape
            • Another popular alternative
            • Also has Addons available

Cleaning Temporary Internet Files and Tracking Cookies
        • Temporary Internet Files are mainly the files that are downloaded when you open a web page.
Unfortunately, if the site you visit is of a dubious nature or has been hacked, they can also be an entry point for malware.
It is a good idea to empty the Temporary Internet Files folder on a regular basis.

Tracking Cookies are files that websites use to monitor which sites you visit and how often.
A lot of Antispyware scanners pick up these tracking cookies and flag them as unwanted.
CAUTION :- If you delete all your cookies you will lose any autologin information for sites that you visit, and will need your passwords

Both of these can be cleaned manually, but a quicker option is to use a program
        • ATF Cleaner
          • Free and very simple to use

        • CCleaner
          • Free and very flexible, you can chose which cookies to keep

Also PLEASE read these articles: So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place and Malware Prevention: Prevent Re-infection

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D

If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.
