please help

Hello,
My computer started behaving eratically when my browser is open. It doesn't seem to matter if I am using firefox or explorer. I get new windows opening up, which either try to have me download antivirus software or start playing videos. The popups persist even after I close the browser.

Here's the hijackthis log:

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. I continued to research this virus and found a similar solution described on geekstogo.com. Computer has been pop-up free for a couple of days now, so hopefully I got all traces of this Vundo virus. I'll post all of the logs that I have saved from my battle and the two from just now.

I remember that when I did this a couple of days ago I got both files, but now only log.txt pops up. Would this be because I am not redoing the whole scan with? Strange.

I looked for those files in the folders and they are not there. Perhaps that;s why the error. I was able to find the job under the tasks folder. It was set to run this file:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\hgGyyabc.dll",d
There is no hgGyyabc.dll in the system32 folder. Should I just remove the job?

    Thanks,

You're welcome. Your computer is clean.

    You're welcome. :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

    Clean up System Restore

You can find instructions on how to disable and enable System Restore from these guides:

    Disable And Enable System Restore
    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Make Your Internet Explorer More Secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:

    • From within Internet Explorer click on the tools menu and then click on Options
    • Click once on the "Security" tab
    • Click once on the "Internet" icon so it becomes highlighted
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the "Download signed ActiveX" controls to Prompt
      • Change the "Download unsigned ActiveX" controls to Disable
      • Change the "Initialize and script ActiveX controls" not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the "Launching programs and files in an IFRAME" to Prompt
      • Change the "Navigate sub-frames across different domains" to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Note that Internet Explorer is not the most secure browser. There are safer (and better) alternatives available like Opera and Firefox.

Keep Your System Up to date

It is imperative that you keep your Windows, Antivirus, and other softwares up to date. Otherwise you are not protected against new threats and your system is vulnerable and unsafe. Update your Antivirus software at least once a week, and visit Microsoft Windows Update site regularly.

    Install SpywareBlaster

SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware, Hijackers, and Malware

Additional Utilities and Tips to Enhance Your Safety

    • MVPS Hosts file --- The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
    • Comodo BOCLEAN --- Stop identity thieves from getting personal information. Instantly detects well over 1,000,000 unique, variant and repack malware in total. And it's free.
    • Winpatrol --- Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. A tutorial for this product is located here: Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software
