Hello to all. Im a noob and trying to fix a computer here at my shop. First the basics.........Emachines computer model T2862S. tore bought with no added features. Has Windows XP already installed.

Now the problem. It seems that something has gone awry lately, as trying to do some things online are becoming troublesome. We got a virus and we used Norton to get rid of everything, but we are thinking that somewhere along the way, files got deleted that should have not been.

The symptoms are, clicking on certain hyperlinks, or hypertext, do not seem to work. It happens on all websites, but not all links or text. I recently updated the Internet Explorer to see if that would repair any of the files, but to no avail. I guess I need to fix the XP, but I have no disc.

Since it came preloaded with XP, is there a way for me to find the product key on the computer? Any help would be great, and thanks to all you tech genius' who know this stuff!

MagicJellybean is a program that should get your windows product key for you.

If your machine isn't up-to-date with the latest windows upgrades downloading and installing them, may fix some of the problems. Especially if you are a service pack behind. You can also manually download and install the newest Internet Explorer which may help repair other files.

However if that doesn't work you'll need a system disk to do a repair if it's system files that have been corrupted and hence deleted with the virus scan. Also if you bought an E-Machine off the shelf it should have come with either recovery disks or a recovery partition on the harddrive that you can use to restore your system to it's original state. But keep in mind that doing so would completely wipe out any data you have on that machine so if there is stuff you want to keep back it up first.

I have installed all the latest updates, and kept everything current. i am assuming that something got deleted or moved or attacked. Well, i guess that i will have to reboot the whole system. i found a bootleg copy on the internet. i also used the magicjellybean keyfinder that you suggested. if i install windows with the copy, then use the key that the keyfinder gave me, will that work? if not, how do i find the partition that the recovery might be on? there is none listed in My Computer. can i use the command prompt, and if so what do i type? any other help would be awesome.
and by the way, how are you spacing in between your paragraphs, cause it wont work for me.

First thing, just hitting enter, enter after a line to create the blank space. Should work the same as you would to create a paragraph in a word document or any other text document.

The bootleg copy probably won't work with your key. There are different keys generated for different versions of XP. So if you have XP Home OEM your key isn't going to be compatible with an XP Pro OEM, or an XP Pro Corp etc....

If your have a boot partition on your harddrive you normally will have a boot option like hit F4 to go into boot partition mode something like that. I've never worked on an E-Machine so I don't know for sure, or it would have come with a recovery CD/DVD. In any event if you purchased it retail they have to legally provide some form of original disk either an actual windows disk or a recovery disk or a recovery partition.

One other thing you could try is issuing the command sfc /scannow which will check to see if you are missing any system files.

Yeah, thats what i thought about the spacing between the paragraphs. thats what i do, and it doesnt appear that way. weird. anyway, by going into the command prompt and using that command, it will tell me whats missing for the WHOLE computer, or just specific parts? and if thats the case, would i then be able to goto microsofts website and download said missing files? o.k. ill try that and see what it comes up with and check back for next reply. thanks for the help. p.s. i just used extra spaces to seperate the text. i told you this thing was messed up!

SFC will scan the protected windows files, which is the core system files windows needs to run. If any are missing it'll let you know. BUT you will require a windows disk to replace them. You can't just download them from microsoft. However you should be able to get them off your ummm windows copy because it won't cause the activation or anything to reset.

yeah there's something else going on there, no virus that I've ever heard of what mess up your spacing and returns. If you open up word pad and start typing does the same thing happen? I'm almost wondering if it's not something wrong with your keyboard perhaps.

There is no document editor or forum in the world that recognizes a dozen or more spaces at the end of a sentence as a new paragraph. Hit the enter key twice and start typing. Just like a typewriter, or any other program on any computer on earth.

Yeah, i know to click enter twice and start typing. im really not COMPLETELY STUPID! thats what im saying, though. as i am typing this, i will hit enter here5 times and as you can see, there is no paragraph breaks. i dont know if the computer here is not reading it, or if you see the breaks on your computers, but, hitting enter here5 more times, and there is no break. but i dont care about that. just trying to fix this damn hyperlink thing. now i have seen many post on many forums talking about "hijack this". what is that? is it a program that is downloded? would it help if i did that so you can see what is going on in this thing? just let me know. (5 more times) p.s. thanks for the replies. im glad there are people out there like all of you who are willing to help the less intelligent!
and also, i did the sfc /scannow and it did its scan, and then the box went away. is that good? or bad? nothing happened after the scan.

oh and just so you can see what im talking about, when you look at my post, look at where i say i typed enter 5 times. notice how there is no space between the letters and 5. just food for thought
i just noticed something too. i went back and edited the first post and it seperated the sentences. the < / p > must have worked. any reason it would work on the edit, and not on the first time?
