Apple is one of the few companies that can, on a whim, drum up their own event and get top journalists and tech enthusiasts from all over the world to drop what they are doing and attend. The build up of events since 2006 have proven this.
They want full control of their events and releases - plain and simple. Macworld doesn't make them the head hancho. Apple is also pulling out of similar events hosted out of country.
