I've tried everything.. help with hal.dll issue!
Situation:
- Simply trying to reinstall windows XP SP2 on a (reformatted, recreated) partition on my Intel mac via bootcamp (did it before many successful times)
It got a bit loaded with viruses and spyware defender 2008 trojan, so instead of the hassle, and since it was cluttered, I backed stuff up from my OSX side and wiped the partition.
installed with the windows XP cd i've always used on a new NTFS partition (tried both quick format and long format)
i get the missing/corrupt hal.dll file error
Here's what i've tried:
-Checked that its actually there and gets installed with dir commands
-Reinstalling
-destroying the partition and repartitioning and then reinstaling with a diffirent windows XP CD and version (to make sure my CD wasn't the issue)
-creating a new bootsector and reinstalling
-repartition and reinstall again
-deleted the boot.ini file in repair mode from the CD bootup (after Attrib -H -R -S to C:Boot.ini) and doing bootcfg /rebuild and doing the appropriate load identifier (Microsoft Windows XP Professional) and load option /fastdetect
The last step mentioned, on restart, actually gave me the correct screen to select which version of XP to finish installing (and i tried to press enter as fast as possible) but the screen only displatyed for 1 second before it switched to the missing/corrupt hal.dll file
so now I think the only thing i havent tried is to completely wipe the hard drive, zero all data. and lose my mac install too or get a new hard drive, which is a pain in iMacs - please tell me there are still alternatives!
**Parallels has no part in any of this, I don't use it.

such as chkdsk /r/f followed by fixboot
as well as trying /noexecute=option just in case i have the type of intel board that needs this
still no luck! i get the option to choose my windows XP version but then it flashes back to the hal.dll missing screen
