I would like your opinion on the best free antivirus, firewall, and spyware software. Also anything else that would help keep my computer clean. Just got a new one and do not want it to get infected. i already downloaded Avast, if there is a better one that you know of let me know and i will install that one.

Thanks for all your help

    Hi Trev,

Avast is pretty good as far as AV goes. Personally I use Avira but that is purely because I prefer the interface. in terms of software firewalls I would recomend either Online Armour or Comodo. Many people who have a hardware firewall built into their router do not feel the need for a software firewall. There are lots of anti spyware out there so I will refrain from picking any particular one.

The best tool you have to prevent yourself from getting infected is your own common sence and browsing habbits. No software can be 100% water tight as all AV by deffinition is playing catch up. You cant develope a fix for something that hasn't been created. Therefore sensible browsing habits are essential.

If you use peer to peer sharing you WILL get infected. You can not use software as a fall back to make up for poor practice.

Also any AV is only as good as its deffinitions. Out of date AV is as good as no AV.

Thank you for all your help. I downloaded comodo for my firewall. It seems to do a great job. I also downloaded ad-aware for spyware which seems to do an ok job. But thank you again for your help
