Outlook Express - Compact files - now gone, help

Hoping that someone might be able to help me. My Outlook Express asked if it could compact files so I clicked yes and it did its thing. When the compacting finished though I am now left with no e-mail for the last 3 months in my inbox. Is there any way at all that I might be able to retrieve these e-mails or are they now lost in a big black hole for good? I have never had this happen to me before so any help you may have to offer would be much appreciated.

    I haven't used Outlook Express in years, but I think it probably archived your e-mails. So they should be in a some where, just not in your inbox.

    Someone please correct me if I am wrong ;)
