Computer stuck in Infinite Loop after Vista Service Pack 1 installed

edited December 2008 in Science & Tech
My Aunt asks me if I can check she's got security on her wireless, and that everything's working fine. I find she doesn't have service pack 1 (she's got Vista 32-bit home premium), and believing that service pack 1 is important and it'll fix a load of security holes, I try to install it. This all seems to work fine. I then re-boot the PC. And it gets stuck in a loop, where when it starts it says configuring updates stage 3 0% complete, and then restarts, and then does it again. I reboot from the CD, and restore it to the earliest point I could, which was when service pack 1 was installed. Everything seems to work fine. Phew. So I decided to try and install the service pack 1 again, thinking if it does the same, I'll just restore it again. That's when the crap hit the fan. :grumble: It downloads fine, and seems to install fine, and then it looks like it's updating in MS-DOS or something. I then get this: !!0xc01a001d!!19440/73074 (\_____\______\......)
I can't remember the exact numbers after the exclamation marks, and I can't remember what goes in those gaps. However, now when it boots, it goes through the Microsoft Corporation and the scrolling bar, and then the screen goes blank, but the vista symbol never comes up. I've tried booting in safe mode, but it loads all the files but gets stuck at the end, and when I tried to boot from the CD, it did something different from before and it searches for problems, asks if I want to restore, and gets stuck attempting repairs.
Please help! I need to save her files, and hopefully her programs too, and I need to do it soon because I'm only staying in London, and I need to fix it ASAP while I'm there, and she'll kill me if I don't fix it!:eek3: Help! Reply quick!

Ok I managed to get the recovery console up again, and this time it finished its repairs. After restarting, it did the thing where it updates in MS-DOS. This time it gets stuck and I have this on the screen:

    !! 0xc0190036 !! 1967/91442 (Nlsdl.dll)

I heard changing nlsdl.dll to nlsdl.old, but how do I do that? Or I can replace the file somehow. Any ideas! Please reply urgently!

OK, I know what to do. I need to delete the file in question. However, I don't know how to do this. Anybody know how to do this using the repair computer thingy from the Vista installation disk?

You should be able to get into a DOS prompt from the Vista repair options. You should be able to delete the file that way if you know or can find the DOS commands.

    EDIT:// Alright, I know I seemed a little harsh, but I won't apologize because I don't care.

First off, you have to put WHERE the file is infront of the file name. If you don't know where it is, search for it on a working computer, or the internet. It's not hard.

Here, I'll do the work for you. Type del c:\windows\system\Nlsdl.dll

Now here's a better question. What's the bluescreen saying? IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED, MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION, what? You tell me that, and I'll tell you your real problem.

Sorry, I completely accept that I was being an idiot, but I am 14, and I'm trying to do my best here. But yeah, sorry for all of my crap.

I typed del c:\windows\system32\Nlsdl.dll, and ndfapi.dll aswell because I was getting that as corrupted as well. It seemed to work, but then it said:

    !! 0xc0000034 !! 3423/15342 (ehiwmp.dll)

I don't get this as corrupted under chkdsk, and I can't find that file on a working Vista PC, and according to cmd it can't find it in system32.

I'm not getting any blue screen with those words on it, all that happens is when I start the PC, it goes through updating a load of files and it freezes on a black screen with !! 0xc0000034 !! 3423/15342 (ehiwmp.dll) (the numbers aren't exact at the forward slash. When I try a system restore, it freezes on finalizing the restore. Command prompt works fine though.

More than likely you broke the OS.

    I think its: W7255M7

I've found ehiwmp.dll, but there are 3 different files. Which one should I delete:

    c:\System Volume Information\SystemRestore\FRStaging\Windows\winsxs\msil_ehiwmp_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_4f290742f9f890d6\ehiwmp.dll

    c:\Windows\assembly\GAC_MSIL\ehiwmp\6.0.6000.0__31bf3856ad364e35\ehiwmp.dll

    c:\Windows\winsxs\msil_ehiwmp_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_4f290742f9f890d6\ehiwmp.dll

I decided to restart the computer, to double check the problems with the SP1 installer. This time, its a different file: InstallCommon.sql
I force it to shut down, and restart, but miss the oppurtunity to boot from the DVD (to get to System Repair), so I restart. Then, when I choose to load from the DVD, it loads the Vista files, does the scrolling bar, and then I get the blue screen of death. The technical information says:
    *** STOP: 0x0000C1F5 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Every time I restart and boot from the DVD, I get this. When I try to boot normally, it it does the same except the blue screen flashes for a moment and then restarts in a loop.

    I just don't get it.:shakehead

I've decided to use System Rescue, which boots the PC like linux, and will let me delete the file that's causing the problem. I won't go into details, but I'm doing what this guy says: http://www.delmartian.com/nullpointers/Workaround-for-STOP-0x0000C1F5-0xC1F5-C1F5-BSOD-CLFS.SYS-KB946084.html

I think I've managed to mount Windows, but when I try to navigate to $Extend , it says to such file or director exists. Also, when I type ls to see the contents of c: , i don't get anything. When I search for the file on a working computer, I can't find the exact one. I get Txflog.dll rather than $TxfLog
