What would cause hal.dll to become missing or corrupted?

Short of me deleting the file or my hard drive crashing?
I moved all the components from one case to another, and the only changes from the old case to the next were, a different cdrom drive, and I added a promise ata100tx2 with 2 drives connected, but didn't change anything as far as my boot drive goes. Figured everything should be good, turned it back on and then got the error saying windows couldn't start because hal.dll was missing or corrupted.
I've found what should be the fix on the MS website, but have to wait till I get home to try the fix.
Windows xp pro w/sp1, os on my raptor on sata0, a maxtor hdd connected to sata1 with a pata->sata converter, 2 ide hdd's on ide1 and 2 ide cd's on ide2, and the config stayed the same with the execptions of adding the pci ata card with 2 drives on it.

Any ideas what would cause the file to hate me?

"Open the pod bay door, HAL.DLL"

    "I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that."

Your computer is taking over and trying to mess you up. Suggest cutting power and hiding in a safe corner until it runs out of steam. :eek3:;D

There's a reference to this problem as associated with dual booting OS's HERE but you don't mention this so no idea if it's of any assistance or not....

Whew! Made it back ON TOPIC! Couldn't resist the Space Odyssey nod ;)

That looks very similar to the fix the the MS knowledge base listed, how to fix the boot.ini from the recovery console.
