Did you install a program like PowerDVD or WinDVD? By default windows doesn't come with the appropriate MPEG2 codec to decode DVD video.

Ive tryed a few different dvd playing programs, but still got nothing, ill try windvd and power dvd just to see if that does it.

But wouldn't it at least say that there is a DVD in the drive in My Computer? I'm pretty sure it does. I'm at work, so I have no way of testing.

Try this - remove the DVD drive in device manager and disconnect the drive (note the model at this time). Reboot once without it. Then reinstall in and reboot again. Make sure it comes up as a DVD drive, should have the correct model number in Device manager then. Under properties, make sure DMA mode is enabled. Cross your fingers.

before removing and follow Ghoosdums excellent advice. Reboot the system, watch the post data screen or enter the bios and see what the bios detects it as.

Also please post the make and model of dvd drive.

Also please post the OS (also post if what SP your using)

Then follow his advice. Also verify that the jumpers are set correctly. DvD should be set as a master on one of the IDE channels. Preferably not on the same ide chain as a HDD. Verify that the system recongnizes it as a DVD drive and make sure there are no drivers you may have to install... Post back your results...

Is there any other burning software installed? Some decrypters/specialty burning software can and has disabled DVD content playback on my own pesonal system. The drive reads all disks fine...just won't play back DVD content regardless of software player used.

I think ive found the problem, theres a cd around here somewhere ( that i probably lost ) that contains specific drivers for the dvd player, and according to my dad, it wont work unless it has that.

The drive has dissapeared from the Sumsung site (I had a direct link that now just goes to the front page)

And all these people seem to have the same problem - http://www.neoseeker.com/forums/index.php?function=view_thread&threadid=5981

    This SHOULD work - http://www.cdrom-drivers.com/drivers/61/61187.htm

I'm with Kanez on this one (other than the RMA part of it). Any standard IDE drive that needs drivers CAN'T be good.
