serious mal-ware problem

Hey guys thanks in advance for any help you can provide. My computer has some kind of virus on it that has completely taken over. I can get onto the internet, with mozilla. But as soon as I do, multiple internet explorer pages try to open but they all come back error http 404 not found. Also it took me to a pcsecurityscanner page once and tryed to get me to click on something. I can't even run Hijackthis in regular or safe mode, the program just won't open. However I was able to run a program, that I got from one of you guys last year that has hijack this, inbedded in it, so I will post this below. Please take a look at it, and let me know what I should do, since I can run hijack this!

Thanks

    Good morning Katana,

Thank you for your help. I tried to down oad the malwarebytes, from the link you provided me with. It allowed me to download it, and start the install process, but half way through the extraction of the files the installation freezes and never finishes installing. I left it all night and still nothing happened. I even tried to do it in safe mode, and still no luck. Please let me know what you would like for me to do next.

    Thanks

Download and Run ComboFix (by sUBs)
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

    Bleeping Computer ComboFix Tutorial

    • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
    • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
    • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply
    • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please try MBAM and RSIT now (from my first post)
  • edited January 2009
    Thanks Katana,

Both programs ran fine this time. I will post the malwarebytes log file below and send the other two on a seperate reply. Quick note, while the malwarebytes program was running, half way through when it started to find infected files, my security software(mcafee) alerted me that it had found some trojans and other virus and stated that it would remove them. But the malwarebytes continued to run, so I didn't bother it. I followed your instructions and hit the remove button, malwarebytes restarted the computer and then posted the logs, I did notice that some of the trojans listed on the log were similar to the file names in the messages that mcafee was showing. Please let me know what you would like for me to do next.

    Thanks

    Information

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

    Also available here.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any P2P programs
Please note: you must NOT use any P2P whilst we are cleaning your machine.

    Step 1

    Upload a File

Please open >> THIS << page.

Click the Browse button next to File 1
Copy/paste the following file name into the new window next to File Name
      c:\windows\system32\ffkuz.dll

Please do the same for the following files
        File 2
      c:\windows\system32\csxlgblr.ini
      File 3 c:\windows\system32\iqwrkfbc.ini

      Now click Upload

      Step 2

      Custom CFScript
      • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

      • Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.

        CFScriptb.gif

      • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
      • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
      • When finished, it will produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
      • A window will open asking you to ensure you are connected to the internet, this is so a file can be submitted for analysis.
      • Click OK and follow the instructions to submit the file.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

      Step 3

      Kaspersky Online Scanner .
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- This scan is best done from IE (Internet Explorer)

NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
      Go Here http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html

Read the Requirements and limitations before you click Accept.
Once the database has downloaded, click My Computer in the left pane
Now go and put the kettle on !
When the scan has completed, click Save Report As...
Enter a name for the file in the Filename: text box and then click the down arrow to the right of Save as type: and select text file (*.txt)
Click Save - by default the file will be saved to your Desktop, but you can change this if you wish.

      **Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
      • Close any open programs.
      • Turn off the real-time scanner of all antivirus or antispyware programs while performing the online scan.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble viewing the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

Your Java and Adobe is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java and Adobe components and update.

      Updating Java:
      • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u11 from http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
      • Scroll down to where it says "The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 update 11 allows end-users to run Java applications".
      • Click the "Download" button to the right.
      • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
      • The page will refresh.
      • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.

      Update Adobe Acrobat Reader
      • Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
      • Cllick Download
      • On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
      • Click the Continue button
      • Click Run, and click Run again
      • Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Now close all windows, including your browser.
Double click on the Java installation that you downloaded and follow the prompts.

      Remove Programs
Now click Start---Control Panel. Double click Add or Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there,

      • Adobe Reader 7.0
      • Java(TM) 6 Update 2
        Java(TM) 6 Update 3
        Java(TM) 6 Update 5

      Now close the Control Panel.

      Reboot your machine.

Katana, the second run of the Combofix ran fine. However I ran into a problem. When I tried to run the Kaspersky program, it told me that I need to update my java first. So I followed the instructions on your additional notes for java and adobe. The java file downloaded to the desktop, so I proceded to the adobe website as you instructed on the next step, the adobe file download and started removing the old ones. However when it started to configure the new one I got the following error:

Error 1406 could not write value to key
      \Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{18DF081C-E8AD-4283-A596-FA578C2EBDC3}.
Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

I should have all rights to my computer, so I'm not sure what happened. I've also noticed before, that if I go to "msconfig" to disable some items from starting up when my computer starts, when I try to save those settings, it usually tells me something like "access denied on certain changes to certain programs because I don't have administrative privilages. It start doing that a couple of months ago.

Let me know what you would like for me to do next.

      Thanks

Please post the Combofix log so I can see what is going on

      Active Scan
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
Please go to this site Link >> ActiveScan << LINK
      • Click the Scan Now button
      • Follow the prompts to install the Active X if necessary
      • Go and make a cup of tea/coffee/beverage of your choice and watch some TV :)
      • When the scan is finished, a report will be generated
      • Next to Scan Details click the small export to notepad button and save the report to your desktop.
      • Please post the report in your reply.

      Custom CFScript
      • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:
        RegLock::
        [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5CA3D70E-1895-11CF-8E15-001234567890}]
        Registry::
        [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5CA3D70E-1895-11CF-8E15-001234567890}]
        ADS::

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please post the Combofix log along with the Active Scan log in your reply

      Katana,

I seem to have a little problem. I just followed the instructions from the last post. I copied the script that you told me to,saved it in notepad, and dropped it into COMBOFIX. The program ran, updated, started to run, deleted three files (i can't see what they were now), then it got all the way to stage_50.

Then the following is at the bottom of the blue screen:

' "C:\WINDOWS\system32\"' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

So now the blue box is just sitting there and their is no action from the CPU. I left it like that, I'm sending you this post on a different computer. Please let me know what you would like for me to do to the computer. I just left it right were it was, I didn't want to damage anything.

      Thanks

      Thanks

      Uninstall Combofix
      • This will clear your System Volume Information restore points and remove all the infected files that were quarantined
      • Click START then RUN
      • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /U, it needs to be there.
        • CF_Cleanup.png

      Download and Run ComboFix
Please visit this webpage for instructions on using ComboFix:
      http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

      ComboFix.exe 1
      ComboFix.exe 2
      ComboFix.exe 3

[*] You must download it to and run it from your Desktop

[*] Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

[*] Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

[*] When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log

[*] Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

      Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Thanks Katana, everything seems to be working normal now. I did have a few questions though.

Where should I go to download OTMOVEIT?

Should a wait until you tell me to try again to update the Adobe and Java?

In my startup program, which items should I leave active? I just want to cut down on the amount of stuff that starts up when I turn on the computer?

I used to pay for Trend Micro security suite, but my cable company offered a free one, do you prefer Trend over Mcafee?

Also, I will be sure to heed your warning about P2P. I don't use it a ton, just occasionally. I think I know where I got this virus from, I clicked on a wrong link when surfing the web. But I'm sure you may have found additonal viruses on there.

      Thanks again!

Sorry, I had a bad day yesterday
      download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer

You can try Adobe and Java now

I'll have a look at your startups next, please post a fresh HJT log so I can have an update.

Personally, I do prefer Trend over Mcafee, but free is free

Below I will post the hijacklog so you can tell me what I can disable for startup. Also I will run the Kasper scan as you requested and post in my next reply.

Quick note Katana, the Kasper program is still telling me I need 1.5 or higher version of JAVA. I download and ran the one you told me to, so I'm not sure what is happening with that.

      Thanks

I think it's a problem at Kaspersky's end at the moment, don't worry though you don't need to run that scan now.
      we all have bad days
Especially when I'm trying to give up smoking :grumble:

Download Winpatrol It is an excellent startup manager and then some !!

Install Winpatrol, and when running click on the Startup Programs tab
The following items can safely be disabled.

      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxtray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxhkcmd] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxpers] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SynTPEnh] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dell QuickSet] C:\Program Files\Dell\QuickSet\Quickset.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [%PROVIDERID%] "bin\sprtcmd.exe" /P %PROVIDERID%
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

Just click on each item and then click Disable
(if the program is running, Winpatrol will ask if you wish to stop it)

I recommend that you disable MSConfig and use Winpatrol to control your startup items

OK, time for an update .... how are things now, any problems left ?

Katana thanks again. Everything looks great, the last program you had me download, did the trick on the startup items.

I'm sure you will kick the smokes man, just stay at it.

      Thanks again!

Congratulations your logs look clean :)

Let's see if I can help you keep it that way

      First lets tidy up

Please delete RSIT.exe and C:\RSIT (entire folder)
You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

      Uninstall OTMoveIt
      • Open OTMoveIt Click Cleanup,
      • When a box pops up click YES.

The following is some info to help you stay safe and clean.

You may already have some of the following programs, but I include the full list for the benefit of all the other people who will be reading this thread in the future.
( Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing )

      Online Scanners
I would recommend a scan at one or more of the following sites at least once a month.

      http://www.pandasecurity.com/activescan
      http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/71706/kavwebscan.html

!!! Make sure that all your programs are updated !!!
Secunia Software Inspector does all the work for you, .... see HERE for details

      AntiSpyware
        AntiSpyware is
not the same thing as Antivirus.
Different AntiSpyware programs detect different things, so in this case it is recommended that you have more than one.
You should only have one running all the time, the other/s should be used "on demand" on a regular basis.
Most of the programs in this list have a free (for Home Users ) and paid versions,
it is worth paying for one and having "realtime" protection, unless you intend to do a manual scan often.
[*]Spybot - Search & Destroy <<< A must have program
      • It includes host protection and registry protection
      • A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites

      [*] MalwareBytes Anti-malware <<< A New and effective program
[*]a-squared Free <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner
[*]superantispyware <<< A good "realtime" or "on demand" scanner

      Prevention
These programs don't detect malware, they help stop it getting on your machine in the first place. Each does a different job, so you can have more than one
      • Winpatrol
        • An excellent startup manager and then some !!
        • Notifies you if programs are added to startup
        • Allows delayed startup
        • A must have addition
      • SpywareBlaster 4.0
        • SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
      • SpywareGuard 2.2
        • SpywareGuard provides real-time protection against spyware.
        • Not required if you have other "realtime" antispyware or Winpatrol
      • ZonedOut
        • Formerly known as IE-SPYAD, adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers and marketers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer.
      • MVPS HOSTS
        • This little program packs a powerful punch as it blocks ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
        • For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002.
        • Not required if you are using other host file protections

      Internet Browsers
Microsoft has worked hard to make IE.7 a more secure browser, unfortunately whilst it is still the leading browser of choice it will always be under attack from the bad guys. Using a different web browser can help stop malware getting on your machine.
      • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
        1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
        2. Click once on the Security tab
        3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
        4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
          • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
          • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
          • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
          • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
          • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
          • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
          • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
          • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
        5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

If you are still using IE6 then either update, or get one of the following.
      • FireFox
        • With many addons available that make customization easy this is a very popular choice
        • NoScript and AdBlockPlus addons are essential
      • Opera
        • Another popular alternative
      • Netscape
        • Another popular alternative
        • Also has Addons available

Cleaning Temporary Internet Files and Tracking Cookies
Temporary Internet Files are mainly the files that are downloaded when you open a web page. Unfortunately, if the site you visit is of a dubious nature or has been hacked, they can also be an entry point for malware. It is a good idea to empty the Temporary Internet Files folder on a regular basis. Tracking Cookies are files that websites use to monitor which sites you visit and how often. A lot of Antispyware scanners pick up these tracking cookies and flag them as unwanted. CAUTION :- If you delete all your cookies you will lose any autologin information for sites that you visit, and will need your passwords Both of these can be cleaned manually, but a quicker option is to use a program
      • ATF Cleaner
        • Free and very simple to use
      • CCleaner
        • Free and very flexible, you can chose which cookies to keep

Also PLEASE read this article.....So How Did I Get Infected In The First Place

The last and most important thing I can tell you is UPDATE.
If you don't update your security programs (Antivirus, Antispyware even Windows) then you are at risk.
Malware changes on a day to day basis. You should update every week at the very least.

If you follow this advice then (with a bit of luck) you will never have to hear from me again :D

If you could post back one more time to let me know everything is OK, then I can have this thread archived.

      Happy surfing K'
