Recycle bin size on external HDD (Vista)

I am running fairly low on space on my external HDDs, so today I thought I would see how large the recycle bin allocation is on each.

For one it was 20gb and for one 25gb. Now, I rarely if ever bring something back from the bin, so as far as I was concerned 3gb on each drive would be adequate.

I set it to 3000 MB on each drive and expected to see a gain of 17 and 22GB on each of my HDD, alas no, and after a reboot, still no?!

Am I missing something here?- I'm sure when I changed the size of the bin on XP it would show up as more drive space (logical), however, on Vista it doesn't seem to make any difference!

I dont think the recycle bin capacity is subtracted from your total hard drive space; thats just showing what the total amount it can store is before its full. If your HDD only has 5GB left and the recycle bin can store up to 22, then it will only store up to 5GB, as far as I know anyway. Somebody please correct me if Im wrong

This is correct. simply lowering your recycle bin maximum size will not free up usable space on your drive. It works just as Haru says.

This is the same in XP and Vista
