I'm wondering if someone could shed some light on some things for me. I'm sitting here watching my task monitor whilst prime95 is running and ive started wondering

when is the ram use, and when is the page file used?

in essence, what on earth is the difference

Some page file is used all the time for files that need more protection than the volital RAM. Program files use RAM. When RAM is all used up then the page is used.

Best if you have a set page file. IE max and min are equal. I have heard its best to have it on a separate partition next to the OS and on a separate drive as the first part of the drive.

You'll find that lots of the time though, that the Page file is used in conjuntion with normal RAM before all the RAM is used up, simply for longer term memory use that doesn't need to be accessed fast. For some reason this was done with the Windows kernel for some reason, so there is a hack to get it to never put itself in the Page file, thus speeding things up a bit.

But normally the page file is only used when you run out of RAM.
