A peculiar request for malware

I am currently considering an article that requires a wide array of viruses and malware.

Can anyone supply me with safe-for-transport copies of Windows' most historically prolific viruses or malware strains? This means I need copies of NIMDA, Sasser, Slammer, Melissa, Code Red, Trojan.Zlob, etc. that can be safely stored on a system without risk of infection.

If someone can aid me with this, please reply here or send me a PM.

Thanks!

    Hi thrax,

Im not sure how you plan to do this. I believe most people investigating virus' use a virtual installation so that they don't infect their own PC. You could always set up a virtual system and then start downloading lots of explicit meterial and software from limewire an look for software cracks etc! you should get infected pretty quick!

Indeed, I am going to infect the system in a VM with no access to virtual LAN, external I/O ports or internal storage media. I'm just curious as to where I might find a treasure trove of illicit code so I can actually do what I'm intending to do.

I mean it earnestly when I say that I have no idea how to get a virus or spyware. My system has been clean for 15+ years.

I only know of test viruses that can be downloaded, they have no real payload or anything they just happen to be detected as a virus by most scanners.

I know of no place to go to get viruses. Maybe do some torrent searches...

I seem to remember something similar to what you do at the malware removal university. I signed up to go through their university a couple of years back but never had the time to complete it. I would suggest you contact Chris RLG who is site admin/owner. They train many of the guys who work the HJT logs and they can probably help.

Years ago when I said that one day Thrax would attempt global domination, everybody said I was crazy.

    How about http://vx.netlux.org/ ?

Would you be embarrassed if I told you it was the very first google hit for 'virus archive'? ;D

Sort of. I deliberately avoided Google because I don't trust the interwebs as much as I would a person I know well. We already contacted security companies and stuff, but I never thought to give in and check the Goog once all our leads came up empty.

I just looked and http://packetstorm.setnine.com/misc/virus/ has almost everything you need to get your job done. I've been getting info and submitting files to that site for almost 10 years so I trust you'll get what you need.

    Also, never doubt the Goog.
