RAID 0+1 Question.

edited December 2003 in Hardware
Seeing that I don't have my DVD burner yet for backups and just out of curiousity's sake, I'd like to figure out how RAID 0+1 works. Right now I have 2x120 WD's in RAID 0 setup on a Ultra ST-305, cheap Ebay raid card. Now let's say I were to get a 250 GB WD drive to serve as backup, how would I go about doing that? Do I need another RAID controller? I currently have one IDE slot open on my mobo. Once the DVD burner comes it will take up the master (or slave, whatever works) on that IDE slot. When I first setup RAID 0 I read as much as I could about that, no real good articles or sites that I came across really helped though. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks-DaK

RAID 0 1 (0+1) is stripping (RAID 0) and mirroring (RAID 1) combined, without parity (redundancy data) having to be calculated and written. The advantage of RAID 0 1 is fast data access (like RAID 0), but with the ability to lose one drive and have a complete duplicate surviving drive or set of drives (like RAID 1).

More info plus a pretty picture here.

As far as I know, no RAID controller allows 0+1 with only 3 drives. RAID Level 0+1 requires a minimum of 4 drives to implement. Personally, I take a small hit in performance and use RAID 5 on my 4 WD JBs, but they only hold data. RAID 5 can be done with 3 drives, but I use it so I get the maximum disk space with good backup/redundancy. I don't notice the performance difference. You may want to look into RAID 10. Although similar to 0+1, if your RAID controller supports it, it has better reliability and performance. I had to update my RocketRaid 404 to get 10 and 5, however.

If you have one open IDE slot, then you could just manually or using a software program, backup your 240 GB RAID 0 array to your 250 GB drive and forgo RAID altogether.

Dak, I got my setup running. I had those 2 raid-0 arrays backed up by 2 HD on the IDE slots. It's a pretty decent setup.

Thanks for the response Preacher. I'll look at those links in detail tomorrow.

Glad to hear your setup went well ginipig. I think once I get my DVD burner and back up all the stuff I need, I won't need to worry about this anymore. Thanks-DaK
