Browse for folder - not responding

edited January 2009 in Science & Tech
Hi there,

Hope Ive entered this in the correct section!!??

Anyway........ heres my problem.

A program I use when playing online poker is giving me some problems, when Im trying to configure it, it asks for the hand history directory of the site Im playing on, so when I click 2add" it brings up the "browse for folder" window, but whenever I click on anything in the window, I just get the egg timer and it hangs, I then have to ust Ctrl =alt = delete to regain control, and the message I get is this program is not responding.

In the window are the various options coming down from "desktop" with the + symbol next to them, all the options turn blue when I run the mouse poiner over them, apart from "my computer" which highlights in black, there is also an extremely faint beige colured box which "my computer" is set in??

I have tried another forum for help, and they suggested running a virus scan with malwarebytes, I did this and it found some viruses on my pc, I got rid of those and it helped the performance of my pc, but didnt solve this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Im at a total loss what to do next.

If this is an installed program then I'd uninstall it and re-install it. If it's a web client running in java for example make sure your java software is current. I'd also suggest deleting your temporary internet files which should clear any bad cache information the program is using.

    Hi again,

many thanks for the quick reply!!!

Ive had this programme on my pc for a couple of years now without any problems.

To be honest, You lost me with the java parts, could you be more specific?

Ill clear my cache, and try to uninstall/reinstall etc.

the same problem exists though, even when im not using this programm, for example, if I downlaod a game for example, then I get the prompt to unzip it, and it asks me where to unzip it to (the path) the same window comes up, and it hangs again, so dont know if its specific to this programm?
also, if I go from start menu - control panel - folders I get the same problem (not responding)
I also forgot to add, that before I ran the anti virus software, when I tried to use the "browse for folders" window, the pc would sound busy (whirring noises etc), now its silent.

    Many thanks again

This could be an indication of a dying hard drive. Lots of times when you try to access the file structure on a particular drive that's dying, it can take forever to open it because it's taking a while to spin up or move the heads. If something's died entirely, it could be resulting in this.

to update your java go to www.java.com and just update the java.

But since it's happening other places then just this game it's likely a bigger problem. It's possible it's the harddrive so I'd suggest going into dos (start>run>cmd) then once you get to the c:\ prompt type in chkdsk /r and hit enter it'll tell you the volume can't be locked and ask if you want to run it next time you reboot, hit Y (for yes) and then reboot. Let the process run and it'll scan your system. After that I'd suggest you do a defrag of your harddrive.

However one other likely culprit for this type of problem is that your index file has become damaged. So I'd first suggest dissabling indexing first since it's really not needed.

First open up windows (not internet) explorer and right click on your c: drive. Then choose properties and on the first tab at the bottom it'll have a check box beside 'index this drive...' there is likely a checkmark there. Remove the checkmark and some prompts will come up asking if you want to apply it to all files. Hit yes to all files (may prompt you a couple times) and after a little while it'll finish removing the index for the drive.

Next go into start>run>services.msc This will bring up a list of all the services running on your computer. Look through the list and find indexing. If the status is currently started right click on it and set it to stop. Then right click on it go into properties and change the startup type to dissabled. That'll prevent indexing from ever running again and can solve a lot of these kinds of probelms and also give a slight speed boost to your machine even if you don't have any problems.

There is one further place index can be remvoed and it's if you go into add/remove programs, then windows components and remove the indexing service from there.

After you've stopped indexing I'd then say do a chkdsk and the defrag. If you don't have failing hardware that almost always clears up these kinds of general drive browsing errors.
