edited January 2009 in Science & Tech
This happens when I am running a game called "Sherlock Holmes Nemesis". The error code shows the file name nv4_disp.dll at address bf16f64d. Can anyone help me fix this problem?
Thanks in advance.

Uninstall your video card drivers in the add/remove programs wizard. After that's done, install the newest drivers appropriate to your card.

When you're in windows, go to start -> run and type SFC /SCANNOW and then hit enter.

You'll be asked for your Windows CD, so put that in and let it run. This should repair damaged files that's making add/remove not work.

I have a problem with doing this, as my cd version of windows is not SP3 which is what it is looking for. My cd is SP2 and I upgraded to SP3 via microsoft update. Can I get around this problem?
    Thanks

You can make a custom Windows CD that includes SP3! Go here.

I attempted to do the download, install, and setup of Microsoft.net Framework 2.0 SP1. I got thru the download, and install ok. When it went into the setup of the program, I get the .Net Framework window, it starts to run, and then I get "SETUP ERROR" in the upper left hand corner of the window. I do not get any error msgs other than that. My only option is to EXIT the program. Where do I go from here?
    Thanks again for your help.

I need to add that I have found the Microsoft.NET Framework files in my WINDOWS/MICROSOFT.NET/FRAMEWORK FOLDER. It has all the versions of framework in it, including versions 2.0, 3.0 & 3.5. Can i just download the other file, create the directories, and run it from there?
    Thanks

I might also add that Microsoft updates has been trying to install MICROSOFT.NET FRAMEWORK 1.1 SP1 update for the past hour or so, but hasn't completed its task yet. It is at the point of installing the application, but hasn't done anything for at least the past hour. Also my system is very slow at refreshing the screens. No problem when I type, but bringing up a window is quite slow.
    Thanks again

We're going to take a step back and evaluate the health of your hardware. Follow the instructions in this post to test your components.

Do you need assistance with burning a .ISO file to a CD? If so, please follow this guide.

If memtest shows ANY error, your memory must be replaced. If DFT returns anything other than a GREEN screen when it is done, you must replace your hard drive.

If your hardware is alright, I'm probably going to tell you to attempt a Windows repair install or a complete reformat. It sounds like your installation of Windows is unsalvageable without significant, significant effort, if at all.
