Downgrading XP install error

edited February 2009 in Science & Tech
We just got a thinkpad sl500 for my sisters birthday and Im trying to put windows xp on there. currently it is Vista home. When it is done inspecting my hardware and it says starting winows on the bottom, the next thing it shows is this message: Its not the CD because I do not get this on my computer, or in VMware. What is causing this?

This error means that the boot sector on the hard drive is broken (unlikely), a device drivers has faulted (more likely), or you have a virus (very unlikely).

It is, in all probability, a BIOS incompatibility with Windows XP. You can try updating the BIOS if possible, but more and more systems are being built to specifications that do not consider XP.

There is a bios and a new hard drive firmware that just came out for that laptop in January. They may help fix the problem. It's likely a driver compatibility as thrax mentioned

It turns out I had to change the Sata controller mode option in bios to compatibility from AHCI and it worked. I try to install the Intel matrix storage manager and it failed to install. I tried putting the setting back to AHCI but when I get to the windows XP logo boot screen it gets the blue screen and restarts.

Everything seems to be working fine with it on compatibilty. What is the difference

Weird, I was going to update the bios but it says I have v1.19 bios version, while the site shows 1.18
