Userinit.exe login issue...

My cousin used HijackThis and removed an entry containing "c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe,". Needless to say, he can't login into his user account and is being logged out. It is an XP machine, and I don't think he has an OS CD.

He's tried this, but the keyboard does not respond when attempting to use it.

Are there any other solutions?

I removed a virus from a few machines last week from within a file named "twext.exe" that was being called whenever userinit.exe started (upon user login). The file and registry entry were removed, userinit.exe was left intact, but yeah, user login was borked. There may be a better way to fix this, but these were client machines, so in the interest of time I did a repair install to get them all working again. Not sure what could be done without a CD or atleast access to a good system.

He has access to another system. I've got him to try a few things with little luck.

He has a HP computer. Does HP allow for a repair install via CD or hidden partition? There is data he needs to get off the computer.

My HP had a restore partition. I think F12 got me to it.

A friend came and did a repair install for him. All sorted.
