HELP! Fixing girlfriends PC
Yep - I'm in trouble. I'm trying to fix my g/f's laptop. The system fails to boot up and bluescreens on a missing or corrupt registry hive (the SOFTWARE) hive. Ive used the recovery console to try to backup all the hives with the idea of pulling one from backup but I can't copy the file (I get file not found). When I do a dir, I can see the SOFTWARE hive (file). I ran chkdsk a few times already in hopes of resolving this. I'm thinking about booting off of a boot CD to try to copy the file and restore one from the system volume information backups.
Thoughts? Help? I have about 24hrs to resolve this before she has to go back to school w/ the laptop.

Have you tried sfc /scannow ?

Thanks for the advice - late last night I used the windows recovery CD to run a chkdsk and repair damage. After that I used an ubuntu live cd to restore registry backups from system restore. After bootup her local profile was broken - I ran windows system restore back a few days to restore her profile. All is well now.
Windows logs do show that shortly before her first bluescreen she has controller errors on hardisk0. I'm running dell's diagnostics right now but it has passed every test so far. I'm not sure what caused this but the PC is booting now.
