Detecting IDE Drives...

For some reason my computer that i am building (you can see from my many posts) will not detect any of the IDE drives during the post screen.
When launching the computer is the cd drive supposed to light up and spin without connecting an ide cable?

I have checked the ide and power cables for tight connections.
what might be the problem?
Thanks

Check your cables (again) for proper orientation. Reset your BIOS to defaults; make sure all IDE channels are set to AUTO.

Post system specs here to help lazy people. (Like me :vimp: )

    athlon barton 3000
    used fat32 partitioned maxtor 120gig
    used lite-on cd-rw drive.
    shuttle SN45G ssf pc

Ok is the drive supposed to rev as the computer powers up if the ide cables are hooked up correctly or not, it might be a powersupply problem.

Thanks for the specs. Try unplugging all drives except one (I'd start with leaving the Floppy only, assuming you have one).

Have you double-checked the jumpers on each drive? I've had many a head-shaking moment while being stumped by the same problem, only to discover I had two drives set to "Master" on the same IDE channel.

iDunno: The drive will light up as long as a molex is connected (power).

I have a feeling you have all your drives set to master or all to slave...

IDE1 is plugged into my hard drive and i added the jumper to make it master from the slave hard drive that it was.
IDE2 is plugged into my CD rom drive and i set the cd rom jumper to master also.

I messed around with the cables and i thought it was a power supply problem but it wasnt.

Ok, if i plug only the power into my cd rom drive it powers on and spins and etc.
If i plug in the power with the IDE cable, it never turns on.

    Thanks.
I might be taking it to a professional to get it installed but i dont wanna be charged alot of money.... o well..

That means it is actually talking to the Motherboard, if wrongly though. It shouldn't be possible nowerdays, but check you have the cables the right way around....

Some drives need to be set to Single if they are the only drive on that channel.

This is the second-most cause of head-shaking moments...

how do you know which end of the ide cable goes on the motherboard?

I figured the cd rom ide cable the end with the 2 plugs closest plugs in to cd drives and the one fartest plugs in to the motherboard...

but my hard drive ide cable only has 2 ends. one black one and one blue one...

Blue goes to the MB. The one on the other end is the Master. The middle one is the slave.

When in doubt, plug in the Blue end to the MB and one drive only at the end of the IDE cable. Set the drive to Master. If it doesn't work, set it to Cable Select CS. Once you get one drive working, add others accordingly.

I took out everything and replugged everything in and the cd drive didnt run at start and the hard drive did not run but the floppy disk did.
    Anyone have any ideas?

If i disconnect the IDE cable from my cd-rom drive, the drive powers up. and same with the hard drive.

    Hi..
    I just wanted to say ive recently purchased a SN45G shuttleX and added the following;

    amd: 3000
    hdd: 60gig
    ram:1gig ddr
    gfx:radeon 9700pro

I boot up and the pc detects everything..
    All jumpers are set correctly..

But im having the exact same problem.. my CD/DVDrom combo drive will be detected but it will not read or pick up any cd nor dvd i insert!

Ive tried changing cables, changing cd/dvdrom drives but nothing seems to work.. have you sorted out your problem if so can you please tell me how? :bawling:

    Thanks

check the bios and make sure where it says primary master, primary slave, secondary master, secondary slave are all set to auto. you could also try and reset the CMOS.
