When I start my computer, it takes forever to boot up. Like 10mins. How do I remove programs from the startup menu to shorten the boot time?

Also, the computer wont shut dowm all the way, I have to hard reset and shutoff. Any ideas?

Thanks.

To just remove a program from automatic startup go into start>programs>startup and delete the link.

If it's a program you no longer need to into control panel>add/remove programs and uninstall it from there.

But there can be many reasons why a computer takes a long time to start up. Things you need to do.
go into start>run and type cmd
then at the c:\> prompt type in chkdsk /r and hit enter. It'll give you a message about the drive being in use and ask if you want to check at the next reboot. Hit 'y' for yes and then reboot. As it's booting up it'll bring up a screen tell you that in 10secs it'll scan the drive, don't do anything and it'll scan that drive. That scan could take an hour or more.

Once that's done you probably should do a disk defrag. Go into Start>Computer right click on your C: Drive then go into properties tools and do a defrag. Which again can take a couple hours.

Other things that can take slow a computer up are a wonky network connection, viruses/spyware multiple anti-virus programs running. The list goes on and on.

Is there a chance you have McAfee virus protection on your computer? I ask only because I worked on a laptop recently that had ran through the windows Vista scrolling piece on the bottom a few times then went black for a few minutes and then McAfee screen would pop up. McAfee and Vista were starting up together and damn near put a stop on the whole boot up.
