Athlon 64 3400+

edited January 2004 in Science & Tech
The Athlon 64 3400+ has appeared on Pricewatch at a price of $440.

UPDATE We now have sound reasons to believe this 3400+ will be formally released on January 6th, suggesting to us that an Intel announcement can't be far behind.

ONE OF OUR READERS notes that a number of US resellers on Dealtime list the forthcoming Athlon 64 3400+, suggesting that it won't be long now before the chip is out and about.

He says that one firm, [link=http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80704-R]Zipzoomfly[/link], lists them as being available "today", but there is a big difference between online sites selling CPUs and microprocessors sold through the usual distributor and retail channel.[/blockquote]

At the same time, the Prescott 3 ghz/1mb cache showed up here in the nordics for 1895 Danish kronor/$321. Available from January 15.

Looks like we have a nice spring with hardware coming up. IMO, if the Prescott will be that cheap, Amd have to lower their prices a lot.

Most Mainboard manufacturers 865/875 chipset supports Prescott in their newest bios.

Yes, I noticed yesterday on Asus' ftp site a new bios for P4C800-E Deluxe, the major change was Prescott support plus they have a big banner on their mobo page proclaiming Prescott support.

I suspect that AMD may try to soft launch at least 2 more processors. INTEL would then be forced to come out with something "big" to compete at the high end level but they would have to play catch up to fill the in between levels of which AMD will, for a time, have the upper hand.

AMD is in the position to gain back some ground if they keep pushing ahead.

Which I don't think will be much of a problem, since they have stated and shown some different variations of their new A64 processors. Don't they have a new and revised version of it coming out later this year? I forget what all it will include, but I remember my eyes being huge whilereading it :)

The last thing i read is that the XP line will continue, but built on the Athlon 64 cpu with crippled cache and locked (how?) at 32-bit. Wise move if you ask me. Cheaper to produce 2 or 3 types of cpu's than 4 or more.

The prescott at only $321?? Thats really hard to swallow after the $1k P4 EE came out. When was the last time any new Intel chip came out that cheap if ever. They must not think anyone will buy it if its anymore since its only 3GHz.

I don't care what they do at the moment as long as they drop their damn prices......
