Internet stops working around 30 minutes

Hi my sister's laptop stops working on the internet after about 30 minutes, it is only a month old. It sounds exactly like it has the same symptoms as the one posted here http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?t=79574 pity that thread stopped. It also needs to be restarted and usually always has to be manually turned off and on as the computer fails to shut down but otherwise she can do everything else on it, except of course using any internet related program. I have tried disabling the firewall, checking the ip address and connection which all seem to be fine and usually vista thinks it is still connected to the internet. If I remember correctly I could still view other computers on the network after the internet crashes.

In firefox, which is the default browser, when it happens it won't load any new pages but can browse previous opened ones, using cache at a guess, however firefox usually won't properly shut down, ie the window disappears but in task manager it is still running and even manual end process fails to end it. I'm guessing this is causing the troubles with shutting down but still it is the first problem which is the cause of all these troubles in the first place as no internet program will connect to anything.

Is zonealarm firewall on that computer ? If zonealarm is on that computer uninstall it completely and restart the computer and it will work fine. I had the same problem at one time.

Yep, so what is a decent free firewall, I use to use sygate all the time except it's not compatible with vista, also I know comodo caused some problems with one of my friends computers beforehand so any suggestions?

Well personally I just started using comodo and its just fine, but another option is outpost.
