opening external hard drive gives error

When I double click on my L drive to open it from My Computer, windows gives the following error. "S-0-1-21-100010944-100017839-100016169-7465.com has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Attached is a screen shot of it. What's strange is if rather than double clicking the L drive, I right click and choose 'explore', I can open the drive and all is well.

Any ideas? Is this a malware problem?

No it's not malware or at the very least it's not malware directly. Looks more like the external drive got corrupted. If you haven't tried this yet. Shutdown your computer. Remove the external drive. Turn on your computer. Reconnect the drive. Then go into My Computer, right click on the drive and choose properties. Then go into the tools tab and run a scan & fix on the drive. Also if on the first tab when you open up properties you have indexing enabled, remove the check mark from that option then apply it to all files/folders on the drive.

I've read a bunch of negative things about the disk check function in windows. Should I be concerned about running it?

No not really. I use it fairly regularly as a preliminary tool for trouble shooting machines and I haven't had it cause any problems yet. There are better drive scanners out there. But the windows scanner works well enough and you have it already.
