Windows MCE 2005 Hangs At Splash Screen

I hope someone on here can assist me.

I have an HP Media Center PC, running an AMD Athlon 64 3700+, with 1GB of RAM, and standard 200GB HD, with on board ATI video (XPRESS 200). It's running Windows MCE 2005 (I believe), and was working fine till this wednesday the 11th, when 2 new KB pushes went out.

The computer rebooted, and has not loaded normally again. I can access Safe Mode with no problem, but if I let it load normally, after the windows splash screen and bar, the screen goes dark, and the HD activity light stops within 10-20 seconds.

I checked the system log files in event viewer, and noticed that ftsata2 (I believe), has been failing to load for a while.

I uninstalled the last two KB pushes via Safe Mode, and even attempted this fix: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp/2

After following those steps, it still did not work, and now I get AmdK8, Fips, SAVRT, and SYMTDI failing to load on startup.

The computer simply will not get past the splash screen to the logon screen. In safe mode I can access everything on the computer, but nothing through normal mode.

Any suggestions? I really can not reformat the machine at this time, so I'm looking for any other suggestions.

Perform a repair install? It will keep all your programs and data intact while rebuilding the obviously broken copy of Windows.

Alternatively, find the files the computer is referring to (AmdK8, fips, et. al.) and delete them in safe mode.

I would need the original CD/DVD for that though no? I couldn't do that using a standard XP Pro CD correct?

I'm debating on deleting those files, but kinda wary, only because prior to rebuilding the boot.ini file as per the directions, the only file failing was the ftsata2, and now I have all those to add to the list.

Just is weird that the PC loads fine in safe mode, which leads me to believe that something is causing it to hang prior to logon screen.

To be fair, you used the guide to fix symptoms that the guide was not written for, so now there's no telling what's going on what with your PC.

Any number of essential files can be damaged at this point, but no matter what, you will need the Windows XP MCE discs going forward.

makes sense...just throwing it out there.

I'm not passing blame or anything...just trying to get this PC fixed. I appreciate your help or any assistance you can provide.

The burning question: Do you have an MCE disc? :)
