computer will not boot from XP CD

I have an old laptop. I put on XP and it worked fine. Now all of a sudden I can't get into my browser (fire fox) It will only work from internet exployer.
I tried to reinstall XP, but it will not read the CD. even though It is set to boot from CD. I would like to format the hard drive and reinstall XP. I need help.

    Boot up windows and then put the CD in. It should allow you to run an install that way.
