PCI-E (x1) SATA Controller - Recommendations?

Background:
I built myself a budget Windows Home Server system last month, and I'm thinking about my future paths for upgrading. I have 2 IDE channels open, which I'm going to use up with older hard drives, and both of the SATA channels on my chosen MoBo are taken up with the optical drive and the 1TB HDD.

The reason I picked such a low-capacity motherboard was mainly price, but it also has the added benefit of 3 PCI-E (1 x16 and 2 x1) slots, which I figured I could use for expansion by adding SATA controllers.

Anyone have any experience with the current crop of cards out there? I'm looking for at least 4-port internal, RAID optional/irrelevant, and a good price to reliability ratio.

I have no experience either, so I'd like to know (if and) how (bad of an idea) it is to put a bunch of drives on a 500MB/s x1 bus, given overhead and such.
