Can't Access Router..even with forum advice

edited March 2009 in Science & Tech
Hey there

I am trying to access my Linksys router and I have tried the 192.168.1.1 and all those fun things and it always comes up with the screen that internet explorer can't display that page like it does not exsist. Also I have tried the command prompt with "ipconfig" and tried using the default gateway address which is listed as 172.16.136.1 which also does not work, so I am very confused. I am in an apartment complext that has shared internet so i am figuring that is the problem somehow but is there any way of accessing this?

First - Is this your router and are you connecting to it wirelessly or through a network cable?

If this router does belong to you then probably the easiest set of steps is to just do a reset on the router while you are connected to it through a network cable. That will set the router back to it's default config of 192.168.1.1 and you should be able to access it that way.

If the router is yours and you haven't changed it from the default 192.168.1.x scheme that linksys routers come with to that 172.16.136.x ip scheme. Then I can tell you, you aren't actually connected to your router or you have some other device that is handing out IP's between your router and your computer.

It's also possible the router isn't connected properly - if your cable or DSL modem is connected to one of the LAN ports, the router is simply acting as a switch, and you're probably getting an IP from your ISP rather than the router.
