The old board had 2 IDE connections, this one only has one and its taken up by the HDDs. What gives?

They're assuming you've spent the $60 to upgrade to SATA. It's been 4 years since they came out.

Definitely use the SATA HD. Then upgrade the ROM dives if you have the funds available. You can get good DVD burners for under $25 these days!
