I think both of these cards are simply product to bridge the space between now, and the eventual release of something that is truly new. If I were a betting man, I would say this tells us we are a number of months away from the 5xxx series product from ATI, and the next gen from Nvidia. I am betting its late summer before we see any "new" product. Probably just a couple of months ahead of the Windows 7 release.
Both the 4890 and GTX275 look like solid offerings, but neither realy feels like its doing anything to differentiate from current offerings. It just feels like unnecessary filler to create a little extra buzz for existing product lines.
I think the realy exciting story in graphics over the next couple of months might be the 40nm 48xx parts for notebooks. We will have to see how that all shakes out, but that could be realy exciting. I wonder if the shrink would yeild much of a power advantage for current desktop parts? Not sure, but if you could run either the 4870 or 4890 off a single six pin connector, then it would be something to talk about in desktop parts.

Nothing particularly exciting, but as was mentioned, if they run cooler or under less power, might be something to look into for that sector.
