Problem = "DCOM server process launcher terminated unexpectedly"

Hello there,

I turned my PC on earlier to be greeted by the following message "System shutdown initiated by NT Authority/system: System must restart because DCOM server process launcher terminated unexpectedly". The computer then counts down from 1 minute before re-starting repeatedly.

On one occasion this didn't pop up so I was able to do a search and found out about typing "shutdown -a" in the run command box to stop this happening and have also followed a lot of different instructions I have found online but nothing seems to do the trick once the PC is restarted. A lot of spyware/malware removers I have tried to download come up with error messages which I assume is the malicious program preventing them from being installed?

As you can probably tell I am a bit clueless as of what to do next! I have downloaded Hijack this and these are the results of the scan, I would be really grateful if you could help me out with this (if it is actually a virus and not some other fault) Thanks for your time

    Since I posted on Sunday it hasn't been doing it every time I turn the computer on but it has been regularly coming up with that message. Also I have noticed that none of the sites/forums I go on are saving my passwords anymore so I have to type them in each time. (I haven't been using online banking or anything incase it is unsafe to?!)

    Hi,

    Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

    Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
    (Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

    Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
      (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

    Hi, thanks for the reply.

    I am using a different pc to write this as I can no longer get on to my one. The advanced menu is automatically coming up each time and when I choose safe mode (or any other option) it goes to a blue error screen and says something like 'UNMOUNTABLE BOOT DRIVE' :(

    Any ideas what to do?

    EDIT - Could be 'unmountable boot volume' and not drive?!

    Hi,

    Have you tried "Last Known Good Configuration"? The only other thing is doing a Repair Install (different to format) which you'll need an Windows CD for.

    Create a thread in the Operating Systems forum and see if others have different advice on this problem.
