Maybe something I missed?

I Just put a new motherboard in my computer. An A7N8X Deluxe. All parts listed below. I fire it up, after assembly, and it posts, goes in BIOS. I set a few things, save changes, exit out. The computer reboots, then reboots again, then goes to the "start w/last good settings or start normally page". Regardless of what I enter, it just reboots 2 or 3 times, then back to the "start w/last good settings page.
I tried it a couple of times to go into safe mode. When I start that, I get a long list of something to do with C:/Windows, and several of the lines pertain to a partition. There is no 2nd partition.
Since all the other parts were in a working computer, I'm assuming that the MB is bad. Being somewhat of a Noob, I thought I'd see if anyone has any thoughts or something I could try before I go through the RMA deal.
Thanks;
Dragstk

You can't just change motherboards with an existing windows installation. You need to reinstall windows.

You will have to do at least a repair install to get XP running on that computer again. I would advise you to do a format and reinstall of the OS.

if you pop in the cd and boot to the cd and do an install it will reach a screen that tells you that you have an existing copy of windows installed (provided you're using the same cd) ...and will prompt you to repair that previous installation ...if you do so you should come out ok with all of your aps (and data) and everything in tact for the most part.
The only acceptions might be a few drivers and such which you should reinstall anyway (like via or whatever).

It's pretty much a 95% fool proof repair.
You should be ok going that route I do it all of the time and I haven't lost a thing yet.

    got questions?

If he's going from one chipset to another, like from VIA to nForce - (The a7n8x has an nForce chipset) then I would still HIGHLY recommend a complete reinstall. Removing vestiges of one chipset driver software is never foolproof.

Thank you all for your answers.
I had planned on doing a reinstall after I got the computer running. But I "assumed" that if the operating system was already in, I could just get up and going then do the format/reinstall.
Yes, I am going from a VIA to Nforce chipset. So, I will be doing the "full Monty"
Thanks again. I knew I could count on your help!!

ok ...well as a last resort ...I'd hate to see you lose some bible music or anything! :nudge:
When I do it here at work it's so that I don't have to reload all of the aps all over again ...and most of the data takes hours to reinstall so I take the quick route ...it works for me in a pinch.

I don't mind doing the reformat/reinstal...when I'm prepared for it. When it's a crash and burn, and your forced to do it just to get running, thats the part I hate.
Besides, there's nothing like fresh Windows for that fresh clean minty feeling!!
