No sound through my speakers

edited April 2009 in Science & Tech
My computer's sound is gone. My speakers are plugged in (blue light is on) but I'm not getting anything. When I go to "Sounds and Audio Devices" on my Control Panel it says I don't have an audio device hooked up.

I'm using an Emachines-E3026 and my speakers are from Diamond Audio Techonolgy INC/model-EMC2.0-USB.

I've tried everything that I know of to get them working, but they won't. I had the exact same model of PC before getting a replacement. And they worked on that, but they won't on this, it's the same model of PC.

Anyone got any ideas?

Have you done any Windows Updates lately? Updated any drivers? Could it be a bad USB port? Maybe try the speakers in a different port, or try something else in that port.

I've done updates, and I've tried different ports.

Updates might have broken something. Check that the Windows Audio service is running - right-click My Computer, go to Manage... in Computer Management, go to Services and scroll down to Windows Audio. Make sure it's Running and set to Automatic.

My first step would be to try the following in this order:
1.) Test out your speakers on another computer
2.) Test out another pair of speakers on your computer
3.) Find out your motherboard's on-board sound provider
    4.) Uninstall the old driver
5.) Install the new driver off the on-board provider's website.

If all this fails, your dealing with a more complex problem than most typically encountered.

Good Luck unless you found a solution already.

Those speakers, they can plug in direct to the sound card right? You don't necessarily have to plug into the USB port do you?

Also, I am having trouble locating that Emachines model #? Is it correct?

Hmm, good thing I thought to look - it looks like those speakers just use standard audio input, and simply draw power from the USB bus.

Can't say 100% that's the case here, but I have dealt with that type of speaker before. If that IS the case, you need to make sure the computer's audio drivers are installed properly... and again, make sure the Windows Audio service is running. If it's a High Definition Audio chipset, there are known problems with XP and certain HDA drivers, especially Realtek's.

Edit: Oh yeah, stupid question, but are you sure the green audio cable is plugged into the computer as well?

Sometimes it can be to do with a program you have used, something you have accidentally clicked without realising or (as happens often with computers) for no apparent reason it has done it on it's own.

looks like someone else on icrontic has had this exact same problem
