So I understand, did you do the repair install using a key other than the original OEM key that came with the PC?

The windows cd that you used to do the repair install. Is it the one that came with your Dell? Because if it's not you can't use your Dell product CD with it, it'll get rejected.

Bah Cliff beat me to it.

You can try and activate it by phone and generate a new product key and then try and use your cd key, that may work. Otherwise you'll have to talk to a rep and hope to explain away the pain.

You might want to at least start by booting into safe mode, and back up your important files.

You probably can't activate it online over safe mode, but if you have a valid OEM key, you should be able to call Microsoft, explain, and activate over the phone.
