Freezing on XP Screen

My computer keeps freezing on the windows xp page if I turn it off for a while or if I disconnect it from power. The little blue scroll thing goes across for a bit then it stops and freezes. If I then restart it in safe mode and do nothing besides go to start menu and restart it will restart but when the scroll thing starts to go across it stops for a second then the screen flashes and the fan quiets down and it starts.
I also noticed then when starting it says no hard disk detected but my hard disk shows both in bios and in my computer properties.
Any help would be appreciated I have spent my whole weekend trying to figure this out.

    What are the specs of your system? Is this a new build or did this just start happening?

    asus p5q mob
    intel processor
    250mb sata hdd
    geforce 9600 gt video card
    1 gb ram

    and this started happening after installing the new hard drive.

    And you installed windows on this new driver? I've had a similar issue with a bad hdd.
