fdc. file corrupted winxp

I have been trying to format my hard drive by booting from the windows xp cd and going in to set up. every time i do this i receive an error message that says fdc. system file corrupted, pressany key to reboot.
any idea how to fix this? :confused:

    How far into the boot process does it get before generating this message?

    If you are actually booting off the cd and it always happens at the same spot the cd is likely damaged.

    It goes into setup and loads a few files but I think that it does do it at the same point each time. I'll have another look and try cleaning the disc. I found an inactive thread that described a virus originating in Indonesia that caused the same problem. The username of the person I was to contact was Trogan but he(or she) hasn't replied as of yet.
