Can't join friends L4D game, other people can... Help!

Hi,

For some strange reason, I can't join my friend liams games when he is hosting, be it CS:S, GRID,L4D etc but my other friends can join him.
I can also host games and he cannot join me but my other friends can.
Its like our PC's do not like each other or somthing.
We've tried turning off all anti-virus and firewalls yet still no joy.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Its very annoying, especially at a LAN although GRID and CS:S will work at LANs, L4D wont however..

So there has been no errors or messages? Does it just hang for a while until it says, "cannot join".

Btw, these seem to be mostly Steam games so are you using the steam app to try and connect to each other? Do programs like ventrilo work or games/apps not sold by steam?

This is where I'd start to make sure its the game that is screwing up and not another part of your computer.

Well, I cannot make calls to him on xfire also, or send him files. I can through MSN and skype however. Non steam games work, some of them. GTA4 works.
I just get the failed after 10 retries error.

hmmmm..... How are you connected to the internet? Cable/DSL? Do you have a router or is your PC plugged directly into the modem?

When you say host a game, you mean on the internet yes? One thing that messed me up before was a bad switch.

Otherwise, all i can recommend is trying to isolate the broken part by isolating one thing at a time. i.e. using a different driver for your network, making sure it's only him your having a problem with, making sure there isn't an old firewall/anti-virus lurking around, and of coarse, find out if it's either him or you that having the problem. The chances are small that you both are having a problem that only affects you two.

Im connected to a wireless network in my house. I set it up and it seems to work ok. When I say I host a game I mean an internet game yes. Its just strange the way anyone can join me except my friend, and anyone can join him except me. Even with all firewalls and anti-virus's turned off it still won't work. Is it possible my router may be blocking connections to his computer? I can see the games he hosts, I just cannot join them.

If your both using the same router in your house then that might be the problem. Be it rare but sometimes having the same IP but different CDKeys/Activation Codes can lead to problems when connecting to an online server.

I've never dealt with this problems personally since I usually just LAN with my buds but if I come across any solution or another diagnostic I'll come back here.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Well it seems to have the same problem even if we have a LAN at his house using his router. We both have static IP's set up, if they were both set to 192.168.1.12 could this be causing an IP conflict? There for we cant join each other?

Ah... so you guys are on the same network with the same IP Address... Yep Surprised you could do anything with the same IP address.

Two computers on the same network can not have the same IP address. Try setting both computers to obtain an IP address automatically. The router will assign a unique IP to each computer at that point. If you really want to stick with a static IP then one of you needs to change to an IP address not already assigned on the network.

    NORGE!!!! Hey buddy....

Back to L4D.... Yeah, what Norge said. DHCP or just change your IP to 192.168.1.13

Right, well he has not set up a static IP but perhaps his router is assigning him 192.168.1.1.

We are not on the same network. It happens when we are both on different networks but also happens at a LAN on the same network. That connection is not set up for static IP so surely the router should assign us different IP's?
