Ursnif Virus Warning

Hi all,

Yesterday morning, out of nowhere, upon booting up my PC I received a warning that stated, "Windows Live OneCare has found potentially unwanted software" The software is "Virtool:Win32/Ursnif.A" Category is "Trojan"

I went through the recommended one care actions, which included cleaning up the virus. After doing so, it said I needed to to reboot my computer. I did that, but the virus message warning reappeared. I've perused various boards, but couldn't find any solutions that have worked for me, so I thought I would post here. I'm not super technically inclined, so any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I've downloaded HJT and am pasting my log files below. Hopefully someone can help out during the holiday weekend. Thanks for any help in advance! It really is great to have forums like this where people who know what they're doing (you) help people who have no clue (me) :D.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only,
the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
    1. Please Read All Instructions Carefully
    2. If you don't understand something, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
    3. Please do not run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you
    4. Failure to reply within 5 days will result in the topic being closed.
    5. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those few things, everything should go smoothly laechel.gif

Please Note, your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use.
Be assured, any links I give are safe

There is no obvious sign of infection, does OneCare say where this problem is ?

    Download and Run RSIT
    • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
      • log.txt will be opened maximized.
      • info.txt will be opened minimized.
    • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

Please Download GMER to your desktop

Download GMER and extract it to your desktop.

***Please close any open programs ***

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

    **Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries unless advised by a trained Security Analyst

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
    • Click Yes.
    • Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
    • Click OK.
    • GMER will produce a log. Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

If you do not receive notice about possible rootkit activity remain on the Rootkit/Malware tab & make sure the 'Show All' button is unticked.
    • Click the Scan button and let the program do its work. GMER will produce a log.
    • Click on the Save button, and save the log as gmer.txt somewhere you can easily find it, such as your desktop.

DO NOT touch the PC at ALL for Whatever reason/s until it has 100% completed its scan, or attempted scan in case of some error etc !

Please post the results from the GMER scan in your reply.

    Hi Katana,

Thanks so much for the assistance. Onecare does not say where the problem is, unfortunately. The same dialog box keeps popping up almost every time I try to run a program. For instance, when I open IE, when I ran RSIT and GMER, when I tried to save the logs, etc... Hope that helps. Anyway, I''m pasting the log.txt here and will follow up with the other two logs in another pose. Apparently if I post all the logs I exceed the character limit.

Thanks again for helping. Let me know what else I may need to do.

Your Java and Adobe is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java and Adobe components and update.

    Updating Java:
    • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) from HERE
    • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)".
    • Click the "Download" button to the right.

    Hi Katana,

Just to make sure I understand correctly. I should connect all the USB devices I use with this computer (it's a laptop), but only one at a time. So, it would go like this:

    1) Run USBNoRisk without any USB devices connected for an initial scan
    2) Connect device 1 (say my ipod). Allow this device to be scanned
    3) Remove device 1
    4) Connect device 2 (say my printer). Allow this device to be scanned
    5) Repeat this process until I've scanned every device I connect to this laptop.

    Couple questions:
    1) Is the process correct? I wasn't sure if I was supposed to keep them all plugged in at the same time or do it sequentially.
    2) How far back in time should I go for checking devices? For example, I have a camera that we haven't used in about 1 year. Should I scan this, as well?

Please let me know and I'll follow your directions. Thanks, again.

    Amir

You don't need to do the printer, but iPods and memory sticks should be checked. You don't need to check anything you haven't used for over three months

You have the correct process for USBNoRisk, but for the other scans you should plug in as many as you can in one go.

    Hi Katana,

I'm adding the logs here. Hope this information is helpful in the discovery process. The same warning continues to pop up :-(. Though it goes without saying, there is no way I would be able to navigate this without your help, so thanks again.

    USBNorisk log:
I checked, in order, memory stick, ipod 1, ipod 2, iphone (no report generated for this), Camera.

There is still nothing dramatic showing ??

    Active Scan
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
NOTE:- Vista users should start IE by Start(Vista Orb) >> Internet Explorer >> Right-Click Run As Admin
Please go to this site Link >> ActiveScan << LINK
    • Click the Scan Now button
    • Follow the prompts to install the Active X if necessary
    • Go and make a cup of tea/coffee/beverage of your choice and watch some TV :)
    • When the scan is finished, a report will be generated
    • Next to Scan Details click the small export to notepad button and save the report to your desktop.
    • Please post the report in your reply.

HOW TO CREATE A ONECARE SUPPORT LOG
Windows Live OneCare includes a small utility that allows you to easily create a detailed support log of the state of Windows Live OneCare on your PC. Here's how:

    1. Click Start.
    2. Click My Computer.
    3. Double-click Local Disk (C: ). (If you're notified that files are hidden, click Show the contents of this folder.)
    4. Browse to the Program Files folder and double-click to open it.
    5. Browse to the Microsoft Windows OneCare Live folder and double-click to open it.
    6. Double-click OneCareSupport.exe. (Vista users need to right click OneCareSupport.exe and choose Run as Administrator.)
    7. The application will run for 2-10 minutes and create a zipped file called OneCareSupportData.zip, which will be saved automatically to your Local Disk (C: ). Note that your OneCare may go "red" for a short time while the data is being generated.
    8. Note the location of the OneCareSupportData.zip at the bottom of the dialogue box. Normally, the file will be placed at the root directory of your primary hard drive. Click OK to dismiss the dialogue box.
    9. Attach the zipped file to your next post.

    Hi Katana,

Here is the ActiveScan log. That did take a while :-). I'll follow up with my response to the OneCare request shortly. I've been away for a little bit, so I am not sure if there has been a change in the behavior of my computer yet, but I'll also note that when I reply to your second request.

    Thanks,

    Hi Katana,

Unfortunately, the zipped file is too large to attach -- it exceeds the maximum allowable of 1.9 megs (it's 2.3megs). I'm still experiencing the annoying pop up window with the Ursnif warning, as well.

Is there another way of sending this file to you or a way of compressing it further?

    Thanks,

I have sent you a PM regarding the One Care log :)

    OTMoveIt
Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop

    • Double-click OTM.exe to run it.
    • Copy the lines in the codebox below. ( Make sure you include :Processes )
    :Processes
    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.dll
    :Commands
    [Purity]
    [EmptyTemp]

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.

    • - Close ALL open windows (especially Internet Explorer!)-
    • Click the red Moveit! button.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
    • Close OTM

If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

It doesn't seem to be doing anything but setting off the alert on OneCare although I have noticed a drop in processor speed and functionality with OneCare itself I've scanned it with several other programs and online scanners but nothing else picks it up I've also looked for the associated Ursnif files on the hard drive and in the registry but nothing shows up WTF is this??? :( I'm in the process of using the scanner on the OneCare site to see if it picks it up any help would be greatly appreciated

    Hi Katana,

OTM also asked me to reboot to complete removal of certain files. I did this and upon start up I also received this log file in a notepad (pasted below). It differs a bit from the original results.

BTW: I'm still getting the pop up

    Thanks,
    Amir

The zip file you sent me was empty, please can you try that again.

I've resent it. Please let me know if it works this time.

    Thanks,

    Still empty ?
  • edited May 2009
    Hi Katana,

I'm not sure what's going on. I followed the directions exactly. It places the folder in my c drive, but when I click on it it appears to be empty. Out of curiosity I clicked "extract files" anyway and begin the extract process before I receive a message saying that "Windows has blocked access to these files to help protect your computer".

    Any other suggestions?

    Delete the current zip file.
Disable all your security programs, and then try creating a fresh OneCare report.
Please upload the new file using the following instructions.

    Go to spykiller
Please start a new thread Titled File/s for Katana and give the following information
    • Name:-- Your name
    • Subject:-- File for Katana

In the main text window please put the following link
    http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?p=688350#post688350

you may also add any comments you wish
then press attach and upload the zip/cab file that was created.

Files can be uploaded by anybody but not downloaded at all except for those users that have been given special permissions.
You DO NOT need to be a member to upload, anybody can upload the files

    @ dbeezer

If you are having problems, please start your own thread.

All instructions are specific to each user, and as such could cause damage if you try and follow them.

    Hi Katana,

I posted to spykiller, but I'm afraid the onecarezip file is still empty. I turned off avast and onecare virus and firewall protection. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Let me know if there is any other way to pull the data you're looking for. Thanks,
  • edited May 2009
Actually, I've managed to extract the info from the zip you uploaded to SpyKiller :)

For some reason the normal extraction routine isn't working on that zip and so it looks empty. But, the info is there if you get devious with it :rarr:

It may take me a while to go through all the logs in there, so please be patient with me :eek3:

While I have a mooch, please can you do the following for me.

    Submit a File For Analysis
We need to have the files below Scanned by Uploading them/it to Virus Total

    Please visit Virustotal
Copy/paste the the following file path into the window
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
    Click Submit/Send File
Please post back, to let me know the results.

Please do the same for the following file
    c:\windows\system32\termsrv.dll

If Virustotal is too busy please try Jotti
  • edited May 2009
    Hi Katana,

    For C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe:
I submitted the file in both sites and both times I received a message that the "file is empty" or "0 bytes sized received"

    For: c:\windows\system32\termsrv.dll

How would you like me to report back the results? In Jotti, the reply says "Scan finished. 0 out of 20 scanners reported malware."
Virustotal has a much longer analysis associated with it, but the short of it is 0/40 results.

Let me know how the onecare zip is coming along... and thanks again so much for helping out with this issue. It's really kind.

Let me know how the onecare zip is coming along..
Well, the only reference I can find in the zip regarding Ursnif relates to those two files. Mainly it shows winlogon as being the problem.

So, I propose we get them uploaded for analysis and then replace the winlogon with a clean copy and see if that solves the problem.

Just do the following and let Combofix take care of all the work :)

    Custom CFScript
    • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:
      http://icrontic.com/forum/showthread.php?p=688718#post688718
      Comment:: Ursnif report on Winlogon
      Suspect::[4]

      c:\windows\system32\termsrv.dll
      FCopy::
      c:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\winlogon.exe|c:\windows\system32\winlogon.exe
      ADS::

    • Save this as CFScript.txt and place it on your desktop.

      CFScriptb.gif
    • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
    • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
    • **Note**
When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box--do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture files to submit for analysis.
      • Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box.
    • Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

Please run OneCare and see if it still finds a problem.

I just turned on my virus protection programs (Combofix told me to close them) and I'm waiting for the evil dialogue box to pop up again. I'll let you know whether or not it does.

    Please do :)

... I've been virus alert pop up free for 8 hours now!.

The computer is working fine and it seems that the virus is gone.

Thank you, so much, for the persistent help. :respect:

I've been hoping to use that emoticon since I started posting here :).

If anything pops up again, I will start a new thread, but I suspect that the crisis is averted.

    Cheers!
