Desperately in need of help with internet problems!!

edited May 2009 in Science & Tech
Hello, I'm Ben :)
My internet has been having problems over the past year or so but it has never been as bad as it is now.
Every between 12-24 hours I must pull out the choirds from the back of my internet modem and plug them back in thus manually rebooting it.
This does not even make it work again though as sadly then it shows all the boxes lit up saying that the internet is working but it still doesn't work:mad:
some time after i have done this between 30 mintues to an hour it may decide to just start working for no apparent reason??
if anyone could offer advice on what the problem may be i would be extremely grateful
I am on a plan on the inernet service of aanet
My computer has windows xp
I use an adsl router to connect to the internet and i also have a network switch attached to the router through chords because my xbox 360 also is conncted to the switch because i have xbox live
please help:)

Have you called you ISP to let them know? Sometimes they can do some line-testing, and other simple trouble-shooting from there, which you wont be able to do from your house.

So you've got a problem with your computer. Time to start trouble shooting. Could be a virus, spyware, driver issue, hardware issue, some other seemingly irrelevant issue.

Do you know if you have set static IP settings on your computer or if it's all through DHCP and obtaining it from the router.

I'm not sure which one I have but which one is better?? and if I have a static IP is that better then having the other one?? or is the other one better??
Is their a way i can find out which one i have??
thanks for the help thus far i appreciate it:)

Neither one is better then the other it all depends on the situation. Setting things to DHCP makes things easier to trouble shoot sometimes because you are only dealing with what the router does at that point and not the possibility of incorrect settings on your machine.

To check what you've got go into control panel network settings and look for your network card. Right click on it and go into properties. Then scroll down to the TCP/IP line and go into it's properties. On the first screen you'll see the settings for assigning an IP and DNS vs leaving it to DHCP and automatic.
