edited May 2009 in Science & Tech
i currently run a small business network with hp procurve 2124....is it possible to buy a managed switch and link it to the unmanaged switch...the plan is to get a 5 port switch connected to the broadband then connect the 2 24 sport switches to the 5 port switch. any one help?....is anyone also good with exchange server?

Unmanaged to managed switches are no issue.

The Procurve is managed already, so I am confused a bit by the way you worded things. You want to buy an unmanaged switch now to put between the router and 2 managed switches?

Why not just connect the managed switch/switches to the router?

no sorry, what i meant was the procurve is managed, and i just bought a procurve 2524 and i was told its better to get another 5 port switch and connect the 2 switches to it to allowe full bandwith so i have something like this

Do you actually have a "hub" in there?

Every PC and or server should be connected to the switches rather than a "hub".

The unmanaged switch is fine in that location... but now you have me curoius about this hub.

the hub allows me to connect fax and phone lines also...but mmain point of that is so that i can connect lots of workstations and to correct something the diagram is suppose to be this sorry

what ive done there is basically, each 24 port switch is connected each to the 5 port to break it down abit and also the hub can now be connected to the switches

Ok... maybe we are using different terms here.

A "hub" looks a lot like a switch (5, 10, 24 ports) but it is not the same. It shares the bandwidth among the ports.

A Switch has dedicated 10/100 bw to each port. If you are using a hub, then you are killing the performance of your network.

yeh its definiteley a hub....its been there before i took over and its wired to all the workstations and they are numbered aswell....it might be too late now and tidious to connect the switches alone. i'm going to have to make do with the hub connected...do u know anything about exchange 2003?
