Just play the game as it unfolds. Don't worry about segmenting things or trying to categorize it. Let the story flow as it naturally develops. It's pretty much as simple as that. While it's a good idea as a DM to think of what you want your ideal story to turn into. Players can not be counted on to follow that through. Mater of fact if you can pretty much count on players to do exactly what you don't expect them to do.
They have no idea what you have planned and can only act on the information they have. You can try and bait them along but they may not bite. They may not want to go into the scary cave. You can of course force them into doing things. But generally players will resent that and you'll get less out of your experience as a whole. People just don't like feeling that they are being forced into doing something.
