Why does System Variable say AMD64 when I'm running Intel Core i7?

I'm poking around the Window 7 OS and when I go to

Control Panel>System and Security>System

click the Advanced System Settings link on the menu on the left and get the

SYSTEM PROPERTIES dialog box.

Cool right? I think you get there faster in XP, but what the hey.
So I click the ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES button and look at the familiar Path statments and stuff but then I see these two lines and it makes my head hurt:

PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE AMD64
PROCESSOR_IDENTIFIER Intel64 Family 6 Model 26 Stepping 4, GenuineIntel

Was there a buyout and no one told the government?
Or is this the result of some cross-licensing stuff between AMD and Intel?

Weird!

It does. :) AMD created the 64-bit processor standard, and after Microsoft threatened not to support Intel's version of the same thing, Intel licensed AMD's 64-bit tech (AMD64).
