windows XP rebooting

edited June 2009 in Science & Tech
Hi all,
I made such a mess of my first post I decided to scrap it and do another one so you could understand what I was trying to say.So here I go.
My PC keeps rebooting,it would get to the windows page where you have a bar with a scroll that keeps on repeating while it loads then start all over again.
I found Robert Hallock's 8 step instructions on how to fix this so started to carry them out.
!) get into the "Recovery console".No problem.
2)Next step,No problem
3)This is where I have the problem,no matter what I do I cannot get it to say "C:forward slash>"
when I type in "CD" I get "C:forward slashwindows then below that I have "C:forward slash windows> again.
Can you help me Robert please
<windows>
Can someone help me please

    Thanks Kryyst,getting my "Slashes mixed up".

    I carried on with the 8 steps but at the end I got this message "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt -#windows#system32#config#sytem-
    (Please excuse the hatches something wrong with my PC as I have tried another keyboard and still the forward slash turns out a hatch )

    Can you tell me what I should do next besides screaming !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    So by the end do you mean after you try and do the fixboot command and tried to reboot it?
